The "Longtail" Name Returns After 20 Years

Unveiled at theGeneva Motor Showin March, the McLaren 675LT made its Japanese debut on May 22nd. The 675LT announced this time is based on the "650S," with thorough weight reduction, aerodynamic optimization, and engine enhancement, all with circuit use in mind. It is positioned within McLaren's current three-model range as the most sports-oriented "Super Series" model, and is said to be the most circuit-focused within the Super Series itself.

As with other McLaren models, the "675" in the car's name refers to the maximum engine output, and "LT" stands for "Longtail." This designation is inspired by the modified version of the "F1-GTR," which was active in 1997 and known as the "Longtail" due to its extended rear end that also served as an air brake.

Following greetings from David McIntyre, McLaren's Asia Pacific Regional Director, who flew in for the occasion, Mark Gateon, the 675LT's Program Manager, provided a detailed explanation of the technical improvements made to the 675LT at the unveiling event.

According to Gateon, the 675LT was developed with the goals of enhancing performance, reducing weight, and fostering a sense of unity between the driver and the machine. The engine, based on the 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo from the McLaren "650S," has been refined with lighter connecting rods, modified camshafts, and changes to the turbocharger's flow rate to improve responsiveness.

The body has undergone changes focused on weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements. Carbon fiber is extensively used for the body panels, and the rear screen is made of polycarbonate. Combined with a lightweight engine, chassis, and body structure, the overall weight has been reduced by a significant 100kg compared to other Super Series models.

In terms of aerodynamics, a newly designed front splitter and side skirts, also made of carbon fiber, manage airflow from front to rear. Approximately 30 percent of this air is directed to the radiators for cooling, with the remainder used to generate downforce. The "Active Longtail Airbrake," which is approximately 1.5 times larger than the standard airbrake on the 650S, increases overall downforce by 40 percent.

The body, redesigned from the rear wheels backward, emphasizes an open design. Notably, a mesh section at the rear enhances cooling efficiency while revealing the internals, achieving a styling that balances function and aesthetics.

For weight reduction, the air conditioning system has been omitted, but it can be fitted at no extra charge upon request. Body colors include the new "Chicane" blue-grey displayed at the event, along with Green, Delta Red, Silica White, and McLaren Orange. Custom color options are also available.

The price in Japan has been announced as 43,534,000 yen. With a global production limit of 500 units, approximately 40 units, or 8 percent of the total, are targeted for sale in Japan. The car will be handled at McLaren's three official dealerships in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka, the latter having opened its doors on May 1st.
