Fiat 500X Arrives in North America with Witty Promotion

Fiat's North American premiere is the "500X," unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. As the name suggests, it's a new compact SUV with the face of the Cinquecento. Tatsuya Otani introduces it along with a unique promotional video that captivated the audience.

Combining Quality and Italian Aesthetic Sense

Fiat arrived in Los Angeles with the compact crossover "500X," already unveiled at the Paris Salon.

It's not easy for Fiat's compact cars, designed primarily for nimble driving in the narrow city streets of Southern European countries, to gain popularity in North America, a land of vast expanses. In fact, Fiat invested considerable expectations in launching the "500L," a four-door version of the "500," in the North American market, but it reportedly did not achieve the desired results. "So, let's try again in the North American market with the 500X, which adds an SUV flavor!" This strong ambition was palpable from Fiat's booth at the LA Auto Show.

While the details of the 500X have already been covered by OPENERS, seeing the actual car reveals that despite retaining the 500's resemblance, the proportions of the enlarged body are surprisingly well-balanced, and the stance, as if firmly planted on the ground, also works well.

What's even more surprising is the sense of quality in the interior. Frankly, one can't help but feel a renewed sense of admiration, thinking, "Wow, Fiat has come this far!" The yellow car displayed at the booth featured an interior composed of a two-tone beige and gray scheme. The stylishness of these colors reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the Italians, something that perhaps a pure German might find difficult to replicate.

It's a little-known fact that Fiat's powertrains are excellent, and the 500X boasts a sophisticated 4WD system, along with a full suite of safety devices and infotainment features. This all-around, flawless car manufacturing also speaks to the high expectations Fiat has for the 500X.

A PR Strategy of High Sensitivity

And there's one more thing I'd like to introduce: their PR strategy.

Several commercials for the 500X, presumably produced for the North American market, were shown at this press conference. Their content was full of wit, typical of Italian style, eliciting laughter from the audience. For example, a commercial introducing the blind-spot detection feature (around 12:50 in the video above) simply shows a beautiful woman walking down the street, opening a compact, and glancing back – with no complex explanations.

There's also a commercial (around 16:45 in the video above) where Italian mechanics, with their characteristic flair, tell a Caucasian customer who brought in a compact sedan, presumably Japanese, "That part's no good, this part's no good, and frankly, this car isn't sexy. We'll fix it for you." When they start working, the car is transformed into a 500X with a completely different appearance. The title is "Fix It Again, Tony!" This phrase was once popular, used to mock the company's frequently malfunctioning products, and the fact that its acronym spells FIAT is a clever touch. Their ability to turn this around is truly remarkable.

Finally, I'd like to mention a work that visits places in America with Italian connections – such as "ROMA," "ITALY," "GENOA," "NAPLES," "PALERMO," "POMPEII," "FLORENCE," "MILAN," and "VENICE" – in the 500X, with the narration, "Americans love Italy after all. You can see signs of it all over America" (around 19:45 in the video above). This is purely an image strategy, but the Italian sensibility that allows for such commercials is truly impressive.

One hopes that the 500X will challenge the Japanese market with that same excellent Italian sensibility.
