FIAT | Fiat | Fumie Shibata vs. Fiat 500 (2) Function and design evoke a sense of place

Vol.2 Fumie Shibata vs. Fiat 500

Chapter 2: Function and Design Evoke Wonderful Scenarios

“What impressed me most about the Fiat 500 is its ability to meet modern standards as an industrial product.” Fumie Shibata discusses the car’s strengths.

—You mentioned spotting the Fiat 500 around town. Did your impression change upon seeing it up close?

ShibataThe impression conveyed by its form remained the same. Looking at it from the front three-quarter view, I noticed how well it captured the lines of the classic Fiat 500, and I thought, 'It's really trying hard.' That was a pleasant discovery.
One of the staff members at my office is a car enthusiast. Before coming here today, he enthusiastically fed me all sorts of information (laughs). He told me about the original Fiat 500, how the Mini was also renewed in a similar vein, and so on. He actually drives an old Mini.

—He sounds like quite the car aficionado (laughs).

ShibataLooking closely at the details, it’s easy to see how the reverence for such classic cars has influenced this one in many ways.
It’s important to respect the spirit of past stories. However, I personally dislike the romanticism that seems unique to cars. I find it nonsensical to revive a shape that’s too similar by overemphasizing that aspect, and it doesn’t align with the globalism of today. But I don’t think the Mini and the Fiat 500 were created with that kind of stance.

—What specific aspects made you feel that way?

ShibataFirst and foremost, it has successfully become a modern car. While the Fiat 500 might have a somewhat cheap image, the feel of opening and closing the doors exudes a sense of luxury. Driving it, the moderate hold it provides offers a sense of security. I also appreciated its surprisingly high seating position, which ensures a wide field of vision.

—In other words, it’s a solid industrial product.

ShibataThe car's functionality and the image evoked by its styling are skillfully blended, aren't they? It makes you imagine wonderful scenarios, doesn't it? The way it achieves this is truly remarkable. In this car's interior, I could even imagine confessing my love to someone (laughs).

—Is that your opinion as a designer? (laughs)

ShibataIt’s a woman’s perspective (laughs). Professionally, I’d discuss its merits as a tool. So, yes, as an adult woman, the Fiat 500 passes the test, both as a car I’d drive myself and as one I’d want my boyfriend to drive.
