Equipped with Bridgestone's premium tire, the "Regno GR-XT," we embark on an adult's one-day trip from Tokyo to Hakone, approximately 100km one way. At the wheel are architect Makoto Tanijiri and Kumiko Shimizu, a businesswoman known for her love of cars. Our elegant Hakone journey for two begins, heading straight for the Ashinoko Skyline.

A One-Day Trip, As You Please

According to ancient texts, the word "spring" carries meanings such as "all things sprout," "tree buds swell," and "the weather clears." As this season approaches, the crisp winter air that had been taut and cold softens gently. While we call February 4th the start of spring, it feels distant. It's only in late March, before the vernal equinox, that we truly begin to feel it.

It's during this season that we're reminded we are indeed creatures of nature. Everyone becomes more active. While not hibernation, people who had been limiting their outings start actively planning trips. This applies to all ages and genders. It's understandable why spring is called the "season of departure." One feels the urge to "escape" the busy routine.

Leaving behind the rising sun of Tokyo, the journey begins with architect Makoto Tanijiri and Kumiko Shimizu, a businesswoman known for her diverse car collection. They set out on an elegant one-day trip, each guiding the other to their favorite spots.

Exceptional Quietness on Both Highways and Winding Roads

We arrived at the still-empty Ashinoko Skyline just before 8 AM. The two car enthusiasts took turns at the wheel, thoroughly enjoying Hakone's winding roads. What is the true performance of Bridgestone's "Regno GR-XT," a tire that has led the premium segment for over 30 years?

Tanijiri“Ms. Shimizu, you're known as quite the car connoisseur.”

Shimizu“I absolutely love them. I've even raced, and I drive them almost every day (laughs).”

Tanijiri“That's amazing. Ms. Shimizu, I have to ask, do you have any particular preferences when it comes to tires?”

Shimizu“Of course. A car's performance changes dramatically depending on the tires. It's interesting how the ride quality differs just by changing the tires on the same car, isn't it? You really notice it when cornering, feeling the grip, or driving on wet surfaces. Just like in F1, where they change tires for dry and wet conditions, tire choice is a crucial element in racing. Beyond that, ride comfort and driving noise also vary significantly with different tires.”

Tanijiri“Actually, I've been surprised by how quiet the cabin is since a little while ago. So, it was thanks to the Regno's excellent quietness. The roaring sound, known as road noise, is barely audible.”

Shimizu“Indeed. It further elevates the car's sense of luxury. It would be a shame to fit anything less than excellent tires to a fine automobile.”

Tanijiri“When the cabin is quiet, conversations flow easily, and you can enjoy music. The charm of a trip also lies in how you spend the time getting there, and having the peace of mind to enjoy a long drive is wonderful. Choosing the right tires is indeed a crucial factor in determining whether a trip is enjoyable.”

Enjoying Hakone's Architecture, Cuisine, and Nature

The two enjoyed their driving impressions on the Ashinoko Skyline. Their shared passion for cars lifted their spirits.

And so, they arrived at their first destination, "The Prince Hakone."

Tanijiri“This building, constructed in 1978, is a significant work in Japanese architectural history and is also known as a place where former Prime Minister Koizumi spent his summer holidays. Among its highlights, I recommend the circular accommodation wing visible from the shores of Lake Ashi. It's a creation of Togo Murano, a master of Japanese architecture representing the Showa era, who received numerous accolades including the Order of Culture and the Japan Art Academy Prize, and whose works are designated as Important Cultural Properties.”

Shimizu“Is that so? I didn't know. It's a lovely building, blending in with the lakeside. I'd love to stay here for a relaxing visit sometime. Enjoying a historic structure while strolling by the beautiful scenery is also a wonderful way to spend a holiday.”

Tanijiri“Incidentally, the red chair we're sitting on right now, named the 'Swan Chair,' was also designed by Togo Murano. Within this building, you'll find many organic lines that extensively use curves, unlike modern architecture.”

Next, they visited "Hoshino Resorts KAI Hakone," a hidden gem in Hakone that just opened at the end of last year.

Shimizu“Did you know about this place? It's one of the adult ryokans Hoshino Resorts operates nationwide, focusing on hot springs. Don't you think this elegant facade is wonderful? The location, with all rooms offering river views, is also superb, which is why I wanted to bring you here.”

Tanijiri“I was actually interested in this place too. It allows you to experience the local culture and rediscover the essence of a traditional Japanese inn. Amidst the newness, the style of high-quality hospitality that Japanese people have carefully preserved feels just right for our generation.

Architectural design is only truly successful when it's functional. Functionally superior elements naturally possess beauty. It's not enough to focus solely on design; considering functionality is crucial. In that sense, it might share common ground with tires. The tread pattern of a tire becomes beautiful as a result of pursuing functionality. It evokes a sense of elegance.”

Having enjoyed a satisfying meal, the two visited one more place. It was "Taiseikan," a long-established inn that Ms. Shimizu finds most relaxing in Hakone. Located in the Miyanoshta valley by the Dougashima hot springs, it boasts nearly 100 years of history. A five-minute ride on the inn's private valley train takes you to the entrance.

Tanijiri“This is incredible! You have to take a cable car to get here.”

Shimizu“That's right. Doesn't that special feeling make it wonderful? I really want you to see the gardens and the rooms. It feels like stepping into old, good Japan. It's very calming...”

Tanijiri“I see, that's fascinating.”

Shimizu“This space, enveloped by Hakone's serene greenery, is my favorite spot in Hakone right now. While the views from city skyscrapers are nice, the healing power of nature is truly exceptional. Taking a short drive for a premium one-day trip is my recommended way to spend a holiday.”

Comfortable Ride That Prevents Fatigue Even on Long Drives

Hakone, a resort area about 90 minutes from Tokyo. Although this was a one-day trip, the two shared places of interest from their respective perspectives. Needless to say, their conversation didn't stop even after leaving Taiseikan.

Of course, their shared passion for driving was also a highlight. They took turns at the wheel, enjoying city streets, highways, and Hakone's winding roads. Even during spirited driving, the ride remained exceptionally comfortable. The quietness of the Regno GR-XT was particularly noticeable on this trip. These tires enhance the serenity of luxury cars. We experienced a comfortable drive without fatigue, even on a full day's long journey.

This can be attributed to the joint research between the Regno development team and the University of Tokyo's Institute of Industrial Science, Applied Acoustics Laboratory. The Regno GR-XT not only incorporates special technologies in its tread and sidewalls but also features a noise-absorbing sheet. The resulting Silent Technology effectively reduces road noise and minimizes sound variations caused by changes in the road surface.

Furthermore, the Regno GR-XT contributes to better fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance. The compound, utilizing Nano Pro-tech, achieves excellent wet performance along with improved fuel economy.

And let's not forget the high level of dynamic performance this tire offers. By adopting an asymmetrical tread pattern, it provides superior cornering performance. Given that most modern luxury sedans boast high performance, this aspect is also crucial. Go where you want, when you want. The Regno GR-XT truly lived up to expectations for this Hakone one-day trip.
