Toyota Avensis: A European Lifestyle, Chapter 2

Toyota Avensis

CHAPTER 2

Design and Practicality to Enhance Daily Life

The fusion of design and utility at a high level is another major appeal of the Avensis. However, in Europe, a car cannot gain acceptance by focusing solely on design; it must also possess high practicality. We will examine the reasons why Europeans have come to accept the Avensis.

A Station Wagon Just the Right Size for Japanese Roads

In recent years, minivans have become a common sight on Japanese roads. There is no doubt that they are extremely excellent vehicles for carrying people and cargo due to their immense interior space. Perhaps because of this, the station wagon body style, particularly the mid-size segment, has become less visible in the Japanese market.

It is sometimes said that a car is a mirror reflecting its owner. With that in mind, a station wagon with a high level of design, combining personal appeal with practicality, would be the perfect car for those with refined aesthetics and a value for personal lifestyles.

The most striking feature of the Avensis is its form. Particularly, the flowing lines from the rear sides are more than a match for design-conscious European cars. The steeply raked A-pillars lead to a roofline that gently slopes towards the rear, while the fender lines rise subtly towards the back. The cabin is enveloped by the interior. It is precisely the design that follows the established principles of a stylish wagon. Furthermore, the deeply sculpted front mask conveys a strong presence. The body dimensions are 4,765mm in length and 1,810mm in width. With a height of approximately 1,480mm, it can be parked in most parking lots, making it just the right size for Japanese roads.

A Luggage Room That Meets User Needs

However, design is not the Avensis's only appeal. The seats offer firm support, minimizing fatigue on long European drives, and the instrument panel features Optitron meters with sporty orange needles. Additionally, titanium-look trim panels and a leather-wrapped steering wheel enhance the sense of luxury.

The luggage space is generously sized, with a maximum width of 1,550mm (980mm at its narrowest point) and a length of 1,110mm (1,920mm with the rear seats folded flat), and a height of 765mm, even in its standard configuration. The rear seats are split 60:40 and can be folded down, allowing for considerable cargo capacity.

While a sedan body style also exists in Europe, only the wagon is being introduced to Japan this time. Wagons account for approximately 60% of sales in that region.

Furthermore, features such as luggage hooks for convenient cargo securing, a luggage-through mechanism for storing long items, a rear deck board that is self-supporting for easy loading and unloading, and side deck boards in the luggage compartment for storing smaller bags, demonstrate Toyota's thoughtful approach to designing the cargo space with the user in mind.

Additionally, convenient storage solutions such as large door pockets, seatback pockets, and a driver's console tray are abundant, catering to the desire to keep various items close at hand during long drives.

Comfort features include a dual-zone automatic climate control system, 6-way power adjustment for the driver's seat and 4-way for the passenger seat, and an electric parking brake. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is equipped with audio switches (※1) and multi-information display switches (※2) on either side. The multi-information display shows instantaneous fuel economy, average fuel economy, eco-drive indicator zones, driving range, date, and outside temperature.

For eco-driving, an eco-drive indicator lamp is located to the right of the speedometer, illuminating when the accelerator is operated in an environmentally conscious manner. Other security measures include Smart Entry, which allows unlocking by gripping the door handle and locking by touching it, and an anti-theft system (engine immobilizer system).

We encourage you to experience the design elegance and practicality of the Avensis firsthand by seeing it in person.
