Michiko Fujiwara Series: Autumn 2017 – A Fresh Fall Look with Deep, Matte Lips

Achieve a fresh, modern fall look with deep, matte lips.

As August draws to a close, you might find yourself growing tired of summer makeup and thinking, "I'm ready for fall makeup." However, transitioning your entire look to autumn might still feel too heavy, both mentally and visually, given the lingering heat. In such times, a deep, rich lipstick is a convenient way to impart a "fall" impression with just a single touch. And this autumn, matte textures are feeling particularly fresh! This month, I'd like to introduce lipsticks that can easily create a fall look, and a "modern look" at that.

Why Deep Colors Work Better in a Matte Finish

Before we dive in, did you know that deep lipstick shades are often easier to wear in a matte finish than a glossy one? Many of you might have felt that deep, glossy colors looked "a bit vulgar" or "excessively feminine." This is because both "deep" and "glossy" are elements that emphasize color and texture, and when they overlap, they can become overwhelming. A matte texture tones down the glossiness, one of the intensifying elements, thereby reducing the excess. This makes the color more wearable.

A Little Effort is Key to Pulling Off Deep Colors

Furthermore, to blend these "deep, rich colors" with my own mood and lips, I often blot my lips with a tissue or soften the edges to adjust the intensity and sharpness of the line. No lipstick color looks its best straight from the tube. It's precisely these small adjustments that make deep lipsticks truly flattering. For the products featured today, try adjusting them to suit you rather than applying them directly.

And indeed, this autumn's matte lipsticks are characterized by their ability to create plump-looking lips with a supple, easy-to-wear feel. Even if you've previously shied away from matte lipsticks, these are definitely worth trying.

NARS Power Matte Lip Pigment 2766 (Launches September 15)

This liquid rouge boasts vibrant color payoff for a modern impression, a powerful matte finish, and a lightweight, supple feel that melds with your lips. Shade 2766 is a sweet, mauve-tinged pink rose, but its matte texture lends it a sophisticated, cool, and mature allure.

Rimmel Velvety Stay Matte 002 (Launches October 6)

Despite its matte texture, this lipstick glides on smoothly, creating soft, blurred lips. It feels completely non-powdery and keeps lips moisturized, which is a welcome bonus. Shade 002 offers a "dramatic, natural lip" impression with its reddish-beige hue, making it incredibly versatile for daily wear!

KATE Color High Vision Rouge RD-3

This highly pigmented, deep red lipstick strikes a perfect balance between matte and glossy finishes. It retains its luster thanks to moisturizing oil ingredients. Alternatively, lightly blotting with a tissue can enhance the matte effect, allowing for two distinct looks. If the color feels too intense, try softening the lip line to adjust it to your personal shade of red.

RMK Future Lips TH-03

With its pure-feeling rose red shade and casual matte texture, it creates lips with a light, deep matte finish. It also has the pleasing effect of making the skin appear fairer. When wearing this lipstick, consider skipping eye shadow and opting for bolder brows. For younger women, it creates a "modern" look; for mature women, it brings a refreshing sensibility!
