Paris-Bombay Métiers d’Art Show Make-up by Peter Philips

Métiers d’Art Collection “Paris-Bombay” Backstage Makeup

CHANEL’s special collection, the Métiers d’Art, is a tribute to the haute couture ateliers. Following previous shows in Byzantium, Shanghai, and Moscow, the theme for 2011-2012 is “Paris-Bombay.” The show, a journey into a fantastical India, was held on December 6, 2011, at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Focusing on the eyes, a matte, nuanced black gaze makes a striking impact!

We interviewed Peter Philips, CHANEL Makeup Creative Director, about the makeup for this show.

──What was the inspiration for the makeup in this show? What briefing did you receive from Karl Lagerfeld?

I wanted to create an eye makeup that was rimmed in black, shaped like an almond. It’s a graphic interpretation of the iconic beauty of Indian women. It’s somewhere between “mysterious” and “rock and roll.”

──What are the key points? Which products did you use? And were any special products developed for this show’s makeup look?

The focus was on the eyes. To create a matte, nuanced black gaze, I used the new shade “Nirvana” from Illusions d’Ombre. For the eyeliner, I used Le Crayon Khôl “Noir,” and for mascara, Inimitable Waterproof “Noir.”

The skin was finished with Perfection Lumière, and a light touch of Joues Contraste “Brume d’Or” was applied to the cheeks. For the lips, Rouge Coco Shine “Empreinte” provided a naturally moist finish.

To finish, I added a touch of gold highlight to the cheekbones and eyelids. I used “Route des Indes de CHANEL,” a limited-edition palette created especially for this show.

For the nails, I created a light gold shade, Vernis “Diwali,” as a homage to the famous “Festival of Lights” in India.
