Peter Philips on the Secret to Capturing the Essence of Spring 2012
The makeup for the "Chanel 2012 Spring-Summer Ready-to-Wear Collection" focused on radiant, pure luminosity, accented with pearl "piercings." The nails featured new colors for spring and shades created by Peter specifically for this collection, resulting in a very colorful palette.
──What was the inspiration behind the makeup for this show? Did Karl Lagerfeld provide any specific direction?
Karl wanted to use light and pearls. This was to complement the fantastical, underwater fairytale world and the light, airy mood he envisioned. His beautiful sketches showed pearls scattered on the ears and along the spine.
──What were the key makeup elements?
The key elements were radiance and purity, with a touch of humor. We created a luminous white complexion and applied pink and coral blush. For the eyes, we used a dewy, glossy shadow and finished with black eyeliner. The lips were slightly glossy, adorned with randomly placed pearl "piercings." Some models also had pearls applied along their spines.
──Could you tell us about the products used for the makeup?
For foundation, we used the cream-type Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup and the liquid-type Vitalumière Aqua. For the eyes, we used Illusion D’Ombre (Fantaisie) (Vert Emeraude), and for eyeliner, Stylo Yeux Waterproof (Ebène) and Le Crayon Khôl (Noir). The mascara was Inimitable Waterproof (Noir). For the cheeks, we used Blush Horizon de Chanel (scheduled for limited release January 2012 / Spring new color), and for the lips, Rouge Coco Baume (scheduled for January 2012 / Spring new color) finished with Glossimer (Plaisir).
──Were any products developed specifically for this makeup look? And which products did you enjoy using the most?
For this show, we specially created a pearlescent white nail enamel, Le Vernis (Attraction) (scheduled for April 2012 / limited edition).
Additionally, we used Le Vernis (April) (May) (June) to achieve a more colorful finish. These three shades are scheduled for release next spring, so please look forward to them!
──Do you have any professional tips or advice to share?
This makeup look is quite adaptable for everyday wear. It's easy to achieve and enhances the beauty of most women. The key to capturing the essence of spring 2012 is balancing gloss and matte finishes while adding subtle touches of color.

Hydra Beauty Serum, a hydrating serum infused with the "Camellia Alba PFA" complex derived from Chanel's iconic camellia flower, was used before makeup application to create a dewy, plump canvas for the makeup.
