The Rancé family began their perfume business in Grasse, Southern France, the birthplace of the perfume industry, in 1795. "Hortense" is named after Hortense de Beauharnais, the daughter from Josephine's first marriage before she wed Napoleon. In 1810, the then-head of the house, Jeanne Rancé, created a fragrance in her honor bearing her name. In 2015, Jean Sandra Rancé revived this scent for the modern era.
