Kiho Watanabe | The Ideal Nail Oil, 'uka Nail Oil,' Is Here! (1)
My Ideal Nail Oil is Here! (1)
Scented from the Fingertips, a Treatment for Nails and Soul: "uka Nail Oil"
It was last autumn when we heard that Kiho Watanabe was "developing her own original nail oil!" We at the OPENERS beauty desk eagerly awaited its completion, fueled by hints of a new kind of nail oil that could be used as a lip oil and applied with a rollerball, all while exuding a pleasant fragrance. And just the other day, the news of its completion finally arrived!
This is the "uka Nail Oil," an aromatic nail oil that has just been unveiled, not yet even promoted. We asked Kiho herself to introduce it to you here, before anyone else.

The most distinctive feature is the "scent," created for everyday scenes.
EXCEL's nail oil, named "uka Nail Oil," has finally been completed.
This is a nail aroma oil formulated with carefully selected plant oils, known for their excellent treatment properties, and essential oils recognized in French natural therapy. All ingredients are organically grown plants, rich in nature's bounty, making them safe and incredibly potent. Daily use will invigorate not only your nails but also your mind and body.
As the name suggests, the most distinctive feature is the "scent." To encourage frequent use throughout the day, the essential oils have been blended to suit various everyday scenes. Its non-greasy texture and light, smooth feel are also key highlights.
With its roll-on applicator, you can dispense the perfect amount without waste just by rolling it on. I believe it can be easily used in any situation.
There are five products in total, including a base oil without essential oils. While I regret that I can only show you sample products, the packaging is complete, and it's almost the final version. Only the bottle cap will change; it's planned to be slightly more matte.
An Oil You'll "Want to Apply" Becomes a Habit
Creating my own nail oil has been a long-held dream. Fingertips are arguably the most overworked part of our bodies, yet they are often the lowest priority for care. I found this deeply regrettable, and as a nailist, I've constantly pondered how to encourage people to cherish their fingertips more.
For example, when I recommend nail oil to clients suffering from dry fingertips, they often reply, "I apply it every night before bed." I see. But that's simply not enough. With every trip to the restroom, every time you handle paper, the oil on your fingertips is stripped away. They require care each and every time.
You might say that's too much trouble, but you reapply lip balm frequently, don't you? If your lips feel dry, you reach for lip balm immediately. So why do we neglect dry nails? It's probably because it hasn't become a habit.
Applying oil to fingertips is still not a daily routine for most. In fact, we've heard many "excuses" over the years, such as "I don't like it because it's sticky" or "I can't carry it because it might spill from the bottle." That's precisely why I was determined to create an oil that would overcome these objections (laughs).
To establish a habit, it needs to be more than just a treatment; it needs to offer significant value. That's where the "scent" comes in. Once having a fragrance on your fingertips becomes normal, you'll realize you've forgotten to apply the oil when you notice the absence of its scent.
It's an oil you'll "want to apply," not one you "have to apply." That's how it becomes a habit. Easy to apply, easy to carry, and above all, something you'll come to love. That is the aromatic nail oil "uka Nail Oil" that we've created this time.
The Development Concept: "Supporting the Working Woman's Day with Scent"
For the essential oil blending, we collaborated with Gilles Berthoumieux, a French scientist who researches plant-based ingredients worldwide. He handled the scientific aspects, while I focused on the sensory elements. Gilles, who travels to over 100 countries seeking high-quality oils, is a self-proclaimed oil enthusiast. He was able to precisely meet every request.
The development concept is "Supporting the working woman's day with scent."
Imagine having a scent to awaken you when you feel drowsy at work, a scent to reset your work mode and transition you into your feminine self before heading out for a date after work, or a scent for a good night's sleep... Having scents tailored to different situations would be delightful and, consequently, lead to more frequent use throughout the day.
Therefore, instead of requesting specific oils like lavender or rose, I proposed these various situations. For instance, when I described the excitement of going out for dinner with a loved one after work, Gilles would translate that feeling into an oil.
We went back and forth like this many times between Paris and Japan. When samples arrived, I would check the scent, try it out, and give feedback like, "It needs to be a little sweeter," or "A bit more refreshing," sending back numerous rejections (laughs).
Of course, the primary purpose of nail oil is to treat the nails, so we were meticulous about the base ingredients as well.
We chose "argan oil" as one of the main ingredients, known for its high repair and treatment capabilities and its resistance to oxidation. This oil, extracted from the seeds of the argan tree, a plant native to Morocco, is so rare that only one liter can be obtained from 100 kilograms of seeds. It contains three times the vitamin content of olive oil and is considered a top-tier beauty oil.
We also incorporated other carefully selected ingredients such as jojoba and sweet almond oils, rich in vitamins and excellent for penetration and moisturization, as well as wheat germ oil. All products are currently undergoing application for the "Ecocert" certification, the global standard for organic certification.
There are four scents tailored to everyday scenes. We will introduce them in detail next time!
