The number 12 imparts a sense of 'completeness,' somehow connecting to cosmic order and spiritual reassurance.

The perfectionist Tom Ford, in creating his "Private Blend" fragrance collection, released 12 scents at once.

Within heavy Lalique bottles resembling alchemical vials lie 12 rich, opulent fragrances. They are deep, luxurious, and aggressive; upon opening the bottle, it feels as though a pantheress confronts you head-on, without mercy. Yet, she then settles comfortably by the fireplace….

An elegant decadence becomes the spice, leaving a sensual, luxurious comfort that lingers long after.

If likened to art, it would be Georges Braque's Cubism encompassing Fauvism. In literature, perhaps Henry James, who depicted swirling passions with precise, condensed prose.

Just as they demand considerable skill from the viewer or reader, Tom Ford's fragrances seem to require a certain level of personal strength, experience, and resolve from the wearer. I can almost hear Tom's voice from within the bottle saying that airy, light culture won't suffice.

Incidentally, all fragrances are unisex, or rather, they far transcend the boundaries of gender such as feminine or masculine.

While the intensely individualistic lines like "Amber Absolute," "Moss Breche," and "Bois Rouge," and the powerfully exotic lines such as "Oud Wood," "Neroli Portofino," and "Japon Noir" are each deeply impressive and unforgettable, for a beginner like myself who sorely lacks the confidence to casually enjoy them, the following four offered a dream of aspiring to something more.

1. Purple Patchouli

Patchouli, a plant from the Lamiaceae family in Southeast Asia. The top notes are a delicious citrus surrounding orchid. The middle notes blend leather, purple patchouli, and Southeast Asian spices, with vetiver, amber, and blue balsam adding depth. Described as a floral woody scent inspired by the 1960s, it felt the freshest and most approachable among these 12 fragrances. A clean, soapy freshness (likely from the patchouli) and a sweet sensuality intertwine and linger. It evoked Aphrodite, the goddess, with a purple cloth draped over her head.

2. Noir de Noir
Black within black. Given that his previous fragrance was "Black Orchid," this might be the most "Tom Ford"-esque scent among the 12 for him, who appears to love black. The base is sandalwood, but it's not as oriental as one might expect. Top notes of saffron, black truffle, and black rose, with middle notes of vanilla, patchouli, and tree moss (everlasting moss) creating an indescribably rich and mysterious world. It brought to mind the lustrous black velvet worn by powerful figures in medieval portraits. The image of a powerful ruler, dignified, triumphant, and shining with solitary glory (just like Tom).

3. Black Violet
A scent brimming with effervescent, chic delight, where juicy fruits are surrounded by refreshing citrus, further merging with black violet. Oak moss acts as an anchor, providing a long-lasting sense of enveloping happiness. It felt the most youthful and bright among the 12.

4. Tobacco Vanille
Contrary to the expectation that tobacco might be masculine, it is surprisingly refreshing, sweet, and gentle. Top notes of tobacco leaf essence, middle notes of tonka bean, vanilla, and cacao. The base adds the aroma of dried fruits and tree sap, leaving a resolute sweetness that lingers. Like a Takarazuka male role or a ribbon knight. I've never encountered a scent like this before!

As a special mention,Velvet Gardenia
Chanel's "Gardenia" is a famous classic in the gardenia family, but this feels like that renowned fragrance with an added, alluring twist. Top notes include black gardenia and orange. Middle notes of jasmine, rose, and muguet (lily of the valley) are added, while tuberose and dark plum fuse with honey, leading to a base of incense and labdanum. Among the 12, this left the impression of having the least "quirk" and the greatest capacity for embrace (meaning it can be worn by many people).

The above are merely my personal impressions and critiques, but each of the 12 fragrances points in a distinct direction, much like the 12 needles of a compass, yet they harmonize beautifully within the order of Tom Ford's world. This is a collection that exudes an overwhelming aura of pure luxury.
