STRESSLESS® | Makoto Tanijiri on Modern Relaxation: A Gallery

All Ekornes products are manufactured in our own factory in Norway. Only repairs are handled in Japan. Makoto Tanijiri selected the new "Stressless® Metro" in taupe.
The new Metro and City models feature a beautiful, spiraling star base made of aluminum. They also rotate 360 degrees.
Simply lean back to recline naturally; the chair returns to its upright position as you do.
Internal springs follow the S-curve of your spine, supporting your lower back. This minimizes strain, allowing for comfortable seating over long periods.
As you recline, the headrest rises to support your head at the same angle. This keeps your gaze forward, allowing you to read or watch TV comfortably.
You can also recline deeply with the headrest down. Simply place both hands on the top of the headrest, pull gently towards you, and recline deeply.
Tanijiri prefers things that aren't too perfect, that don't cater to every whim. "That's precisely why chemical reactions occur over time. There's always an atmosphere that can only be created by time and ownership."
This Tokyo office is a new location, relocated in October. The raw concrete interior is accented by reclaimed cedar from Hiroshima and mottled iron plates, finished with paint typically used for cars and motorcycles.
He wanted to pursue his own design, so he and his staff applied the paint to the iron plates themselves. Looking closely at the iron plates covering one wall, you'll notice two doors seamlessly integrated.
Relaxation is a state of being liberated. "Even if you work 365 days a year, there's a difference between 'not being able to rest' and 'not resting.' When you actively choose to work, the results differ, and you're relaxed every day. You could say every day is Sunday."
The Metro is a modern reinterpretation of the original Stressless® Chair, retaining its classic, retro charm.
The City offers a simple, sophisticated impression, characteristic of Norwegian design.
The Stressless® Metro features a built-in, adjustable cushion pillow in the headrest. You can move the inner pillow to suit your preference. When fully reclined and lying down, it can even be used as a pillow.
The simple Stressless® City, with its elegant steel base, instantly adds a modern touch to any living room.
Tanijiri selected taupe, a color that reveals diverse expressions depending on its surroundings. "It would suit a beautiful space, but I also think it would look incredibly cool in a warehouse-like setting," he says.
Both the Metro and City are also available in a low-back version without an ottoman, perfect for conversations with family and friends.
Arranged around the newly released Stressless® Urban Table (S size ¥51,840, L size ¥75,600), the setting evokes the ambiance of a hotel lounge or elegant salon.
