Keiko Toda | The Best Season Arrives! Autumn in New York Gallery

My trip began with "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical."
Though "Beautiful" has only 20 characters, the scenes shift so rapidly and the cast changes so quickly that it never gets boring. Jessie Mueller is superb as the lead, and her piano playing (faked, of course) is also outstanding.
I drank a lot of beer and wine. Is New York just very dry?
I skipped the sweets and went straight for the beer.
Spotted Budweiser with the American flag printed on it.
Speaking of sweets, I couldn't resist snapping a photo of a cake shop I saw on the street. It had marble-like chocolate on top of the cake. Isn't that amazing!?
As usual, I spent my time in New York immersed in Broadway. This year, I saw eight shows.
The second show was "Aladdin." The Genie, who won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor, embarks on an adventure with Aladdin. He's huge yet incredibly agile! Full of charm, he earned thunderous applause from the audience.
The third show was "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," a comedy set in Edwardian England. The highlight is Jefferson Mays playing multiple roles with incredible skill, and just seeing that made me very satisfied.
As the trip reached its midpoint, where did I head next?
The fourth show: "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill."
"Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" is a one-woman show portraying the live performance of the brilliant jazz singer Billie Holiday. Since it's a performance of a live show, there are, of course, songs.
How long did Audra McDonald, who won a Tony for this role, listen to Billie Holiday? How much research did she do? To sing and act so much like her... it gave me goosebumps.
The sunlight in New York was quite strong during this period, so I bought a toy pair of sunglasses when I arrived.
These are my prize sunglasses. Probably for kids? About $10.
The fifth show was "If/Then," a new musical starring Idina Menzel, who won a Tony for her role in the original production of "Wicked."
"If/Then" was also quite difficult for me to understand. The story seemed to involve two parallel lives based on "what if" scenarios, and the characters switching between them. All I was left with was the realization of my limited English.
"If/Then." It was so confusing I couldn't help but laugh, and only near the end did I start to grasp it. But Idina Menzel's singing was as amazing as ever. Even without understanding the lyrics, just hearing her sing live was satisfying.
I got my vegetables from smoothies. I know what they are, but I buy them every year for some reason. These and V8 got me through!
A meal from one of the days. Broadway marathons are physically demanding. Refueling is also an important part of the job.
The sixth show, "On the Town," can be summed up in one word: "Wow!!" It's a classic musical.
"On the Town," which premiered on Broadway in 1944, is about sailors on shore leave in New York having romantic adventures. Singing, dancing, and falling in love. It's vibrant and happy. Everyone is so talented!
The seventh show was "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." On this day, Andrew Rannells starred, replacing Neil Patrick Harris, who won a Tony. Andrew gave a great, passionate performance, but perhaps he was a bit too plump for the role... (laughs)
On my last day, I deliberately chose a straight play: "It's Only a Play." Honestly, with my English skills, straight plays are impossible for me, but since the highly respected Nathan Lane was in it, I had to go.
I discovered a new shop called "Zai-ya." It seems to have been around for a while. It's a deli, but they serve onigiri and miso soup that Japanese people will find familiar. It's comforting.
"Zai-ya" is located between Fifth and Madison Avenues on 45th Street and has seating for dining in!
"Zai-ya" also has various breads with a taste similar to Japanese bread. Their shokupan (sliced bread) sells incredibly well, and many people were coming to buy it one after another. Definitely check it out if you visit New York.
