BOOK | "Tokyo Homes" Are Still Strange, Aren't They? Gallery

In most European countries, architectural designs that disrupt the visual harmony of the landscape are often prohibited by law, for both corporations and private residences. To foreigners accustomed to such regulated cityscapes, Tokyo might appear somewhat chaotic.
The “Tokyo Houses” captured by Stella first surprise the viewer. After a moment, a sense of tranquility emerges, followed by the subtle presence of everyday life within the scenery.
“I wanted to capture three elements: the houses, the life within them, and the surrounding atmosphere. Through these, I aimed to convey the essence of ‘Tokyo.’ I intentionally included elements like businessmen on bicycles, families with children going to kindergarten, and parking enforcement officers,” says Stella.
All photographs maintain a level horizon and proper exposure. Capturing the unusual with a straightforward approach can also evoke a sense of humor.
When asked about his work in Paris, he replied, “Actually, in France, I was an engineer for Citroën, responsible for car body design. Photography was a hobby. I started taking it seriously and became a professional after moving to Tokyo.”
He now lives in Tokyo and contributes to publications such as France’s Le Monde, the US’s Wall Street Journal, and Japanese architectural magazines.
