TRAVEL | A Weekend Trip to Meet Jomon Sugi

Yakushima Island, located about 135 km south of Kagoshima City. Its area of approximately 541 km² is slightly smaller than Tokyo's 23 wards (approx. 621 km²). It is the ninth-largest island in Japan. The UNESCO World Heritage site covers about 21% of the island, approximately 107 km², and was first recognized as a World Heritage site in 1993 along with Himeji Castle, Horyu-ji Temple, and Shirakami-Sanchi.
About a 2-hour ride on a high-speed ferry from Kagoshima. You can also fly from Kagoshima Airport or Itami Airport.
Sankara Hotel & Spa Yakushima offers 29 rooms, primarily villa-style, spread across a vast 30,000 m² site.
Known as Nagata Inakahama, this beach has the highest density of loggerhead sea turtles landing in Japan, with a yellow sandy shore formed from crushed granite stretching for about 1 km.
Yakushima is home to the Yakushima deer, a subspecies of the Japanese sika deer.
Yakushima, also known as the "Alps of the Sea," is characterized by several high mountains, including the Kyushu's highest peak, Mt. Miyanoura (1936m).

After passing through the entrance lobby, guests are offered a welcome drink in the library lounge. Through the windows, a pool is visible in the foreground, with the sea stretching out beyond.
Yakushima's mystical twilight.
The villas are individually detached, with 12 villas (each 53m²) and one Sankara Villa Suite (104m²). The main building houses two types of suites (126m² and 71m²), totaling four rooms. The photo shows a suite in the main building.

The suites feature an in-spa room for in-room treatments and an outdoor bath (open-air bath) to enjoy Yakushima's nature.
Sankara offers two dining options: the casual "ayana" and "okas," which serves a full French course. Guests can enjoy the cuisine at each. The photo shows "okas" on the 2nd floor of the main building.
The "Goose Barnacle Consommé" served during our stay. Resembling the limb of a reptile, it looks somewhat grotesque, but it is actually a type of crustacean. It offers a subtle aroma of the sea and a chewy texture.
Sankara Hotel & Spa Yakushima also boasts exquisite homemade bakery items, baked fresh each morning.
Asia Herb Association is Thailand's premier spa brand, making its debut in Japan. It offers herbal heat treatments based on traditional Thai medicine, with a history of approximately 2,500 years.
A blend of about 18 types of organically grown herbs is used. Applying these herbal balls, wrapped in cotton cloth and steamed, helps relieve fatigue and boost the body's self-healing power.

The Jomon Sugi cedar, said to be 3,000 to 4,000 years old.
The trailhead features a logging train yard, and the mountain path follows the railway tracks.
After about a three-hour walk, you arrive at a checkpoint: Wilson's Stump.
The interior is hollow, and looking up reveals a spot that appears heart-shaped, a must-see for hikers.
