The Connaught opened in 1897. Originally named the "Coburg Hotel" after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Queen Victoria's consort. It was later renamed "The Connaught" in 1917, in honour of Queen Victoria's third son, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught.
It is also known for the fountain sculpture "Silence" in the plaza in front of the hotel, created by Tadao Ando, Japan's celebrated architect.
