Testing Bridgestone's latest Blizzak VRX studless tires on Hokkaido's terrain.
Bridgestone's Blizzak VRX achieves its highest performance in the 25-year history of the Blizzak series.
The newly adopted "Active Foaming Rubber" improves water dispersion. The tread surface, which acts as a water channel, is coated with a hydrophilic material, making it easier for water to flow along the inner walls of the fine bubbles on the tire surface, thereby reducing water on the road.
The design of the blocks on the inner left and right sides of the tread pattern has been evolved and optimized for their respective roles on the inside and outside. By increasing the contact area, it grips icy surfaces more firmly and enhances driving performance.
The smaller, zigzagging V-shaped blocks and their sipes enhance the scraping effect, allowing each block to firmly contact the various uneven surfaces of icy roads. This provides high grip regardless of road conditions.
The "New Asymmetrical Pattern" adapts to constantly changing road conditions and driving scenarios that vary with time of day and temperature. By preventing water from easily emerging from the tire grooves, it enhances braking performance on ice and snow.
A comparative test was conducted, comparing the old and new Blizzak tires on an icy course using a 4WD minivan.
After accelerating, the vehicle maintained a speed of 30 km/h and braked at the same point. Compared to the previous model, the braking distance was so improved that it's no exaggeration to say it stopped about one car length shorter than expected.
We also test-drove the new Crown in its 4WD configuration.
The Blizzak VRX is available in 108 sizes, from 135/80R12 68Q to 245/40R20 95Q. Prices are open.
