Test Drive the New BMW X5 | BMW Gallery

The X5, a pioneer of what BMW calls SAVs (Sports Activity Vehicles), has evolved into its third-generation model.
The new exterior design strongly conveys a "keep the concept" feel.
The interior design has a slightly more modern feel compared to the previous model. Like the previous model, it uses a "pinched" dashboard shape, resembling the cross-section of a rugby ball.
The transmission is an 8-speed torque converter automatic.
A large display, resembling a tablet device propped upright, is laid out at the top of the center panel.
The rear axle is equipped with a mechanical torque vectoring system. During cornering, it actively aids turning (suppressing understeer) by distributing more torque to the outer drive wheel and less to the inner drive wheel. Conversely, it suppresses excessive turning (oversteer) through opposite control.
A Bang & Olufsen audio system is also available as an option.
The trunk capacity of the new X5 is up to 1,870 liters when the seats are folded down.
The "xDrive50i" is equipped with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine, producing a maximum output of 330 kW (450 hp) at 5,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 2,000-4,500 rpm.
The new X5 features a slightly inverted slant grille to emphasize the length of the nose, further accentuating its elongated silhouette.
The new X5 also enhances its sense of width by widening the kidney grille and air intakes.
From the rear, the slightly slimmer, L-shaped taillights are a key distinguishing feature of the new model.
The character line, running from above the front fender arch, over the door handle, and to the rear combination lamps, is an identity inherited from the previous model.
When asked if there were any areas the designers particularly wanted to refine, the answer was, "We wanted to create a more elegant atmosphere."
The new look of the X5, which plays a leading role in the X series.
The engine in the "xDrive 30d" is a 2,993cc inline 6-cylinder diesel turbo, producing a maximum output of 190 kW (258 hp) at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 560 Nm at 1,500-3,000 rpm.
Yasuhiko Kawamura test drove both the "xDrive50i" and "xDrive30d" X5 models in Canada.
