The concept behind this work is that by using paper, various shapes can be created, achieving a thinness not possible with conventional methods. Pictured at the workshop where Hitomi Igarashi created her winning entry, “Making Porcelain with an Origami.”
By pouring a raw material called slurry—a mixture of clay, water glass, and water—into a mold made by folding paper and then firing it, the ceramic develops creases like those found in paper.
“I am deeply interested in the potential hidden within paper molds that can create thin, delicate ceramic shapes, and how this can lead to products that benefit society,” says Igarashi.
The “LEXUS DESIGN AWARD” is a domestic design competition for young creators worldwide, launched by Lexus with the aim of fostering “DESIGN” that enriches society. The first prize-winning works were exhibited at Milan Design Week in Italy.

While a student at Tama Art University’s Department of Product Design, Igarashi proposed an innovative idea: firing porcelain using paper molds, under the theme of “Motion” for the first “LEXUS DESIGN AWARD.”

Guelt-Stocker, artistic director of Ars Electronica, will participate as a lecturer in the workshop event “LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2014-DESIGNER’S COLLEGE.”
