'Kuniyoshi: The Enduring Spirit of Edo' Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Issai) 'Miyamoto Musashi's Battle with the Whale,' circa 1847, triptych, color woodblock print. *On display in the late period only.*
'Kuniyoshi: The Enduring Spirit of Edo' Depicts the anecdote from 'Kokon Chomon Shu' and other tales of the strong woman of Omi Province, Okane, who tamed a runaway horse by stepping on its reins. Kuniyoshi's use of background depiction and shading, influenced by Western copperplate prints, brings a mysterious balance to the composition. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Issai) 'The Brave Woman of Omi Province, Okane,' circa 1831-32, horizontal oban, color woodblock print. *On display in the early period only.*
'Kuniyoshi: The Enduring Spirit of Edo' In 1855, at the request of the brothel Okamotoro in Yoshiwara, Kuniyoshi painted this enormous votive tablet to be dedicated to Senso-ji Temple, based on the legend of the demon woman of Asajigahara. Its lifelike depiction caused a sensation at the time, and the following year, a puppet show based on this tablet was held in Asakusa Okuyama, becoming a popular attraction. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Issai) 'Hitotsuya,' 1855, 228.2 × 372.0 cm, pigments on board, framed. Collection of Senso-ji Temple, Kinryuzan.
'Kuniyoshi: The Enduring Spirit of Edo' Kuniyoshi and his disciples join the procession for the Sanno Festival. Kuniyoshi himself is said to be the one in the flamboyant costume at the front (far left), followed by his disciples, who stylishly carry fans bearing his name. The patterns on the umbrellas, large fans, and the disciples' yukatas feature the seal of Kuniyoshi's school, a stylized 'yoshi' character within a paulownia design. Kuniyoshi was known for his chivalrous and fatherly nature, and was admired by many disciples. A memorial monument erected for him on his thirteenth anniversary at Mitsui Shrine (Sumida Ward, Tokyo) lists the names of over 70 disciples and grand-disciples. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Issai) 'Brave Kuniyoshi: Paulownia and Tiger Pattern,' circa 1848, triptych, color woodblock print. *On display in the early period only.*
