Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) Gallery

Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) The "Divine of Creation" series delves into the allure of creators themselves. Our 15th guest is artist Yasuhiro Suzuki, whose past life as a battlefield doctor was revealed in the first part.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "He's truly multi-talented. Very dexterous too. He can do anything. There's nothing impossible for him. He doesn't like studying or assigned tasks, but his intellect for calculations and such is extraordinary," says Ito.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "When you're lost or frustrated, feeling like 'things aren't going well,' or stuck in a rut, or feeling unwell, your energy levels drop. What should you do? Don't overthink it. Just relax for a moment and ask yourself, 'What did I originally want to do?' or 'What would make me happy?' Reconfirm your own joy. It's important not to let your thoughts become too complicated," says Ito.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "This kendama I have now was given to me by a teacher in junior high school. The teacher brought it to class and said, 'You can play with it,' so about ten of us would gather during break time. Then one day, the teacher started saying, 'If the first person to do the difficult trick called 'lighthouse' for three seconds gets the kendama,'" says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "Then, I was the first one to do the 'lighthouse' trick. The teacher was very surprised. He wrote 'Yasuhiro' on it and gave me the kendama as promised," says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "Even now, when I catch sight of the kendama, I feel like, 'Shall we play?' and start. I always set a goal that's a little challenging for me at that moment, like 'I'll do it 10 times in a row and succeed every time.' Then I concentrate until I succeed. After that, I put it back in its usual place," says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "One day, while playing with the kendama, I was thinking about gravity, and the red ball started to look like an apple. That's when I came up with this idea. An apple hangs on a tree, and below it, someone waits for it to fall. The moment it drops, they catch it with a branch. Perhaps that's the origin of the kendama? Maybe it was born in a miraculous moment where humans and nature aligned?" says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "When I feel like I need to jot something down, I momentarily think, 'Will I bump into people if I stop here?' but then I write it down because I feel 'it'll disappear if I don't do it now,'" says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) His atelier is filled with numerous notepads containing memos of ideas and thoughts.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "I had these notepads where I jotted down various ideas and thoughts when I was a university student. I wanted to look at them again, so I made a scrapbook for myself. The dates are from that time. It's important that these still exist. Looking through them one by one, I can really understand what I was thinking back then," says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "The story of how you received this kendama from your teacher, rather than buying it, is wonderful, isn't it? You have such a pure, innocent quality, and you still cherish that kendama from back then. Perhaps that's what allows you to constantly create and catch inspiration?" says Ito.

Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) White paper leaves printed with open and closed eyes rotate in the air, appearing to "blink." When visitors gather fallen leaves and insert them into a cylinder, they are blown up to a height of 6 meters and shower down into the space.
(Photo: "Blinking Leaves" (2003) photo: Katsuhiro Ichikawa Courtesy of Wacoal Art Center)
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "You tell these stories in such an amusing way, but you don't speak at all with people you don't get along with, do you?" asks Ito. "Yes, I tend to retort quite a bit. Without reading the room..." says Suzuki. "That's because you were a battlefield doctor in a past life. You have a strong sense of justice, like 'wounded soldiers and the sick are neither enemy nor ally,'" says Ito.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "Apples are a bit scary, aren't they? Like something bad but intriguing (laughs). I want to catch those apples, which could attack at any moment, with a branch," says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "Until now, I've been solely focused on creating. I've thought about many things, but I haven't been able to put them into words. I feel like I might be able to do that little by little from now on," says Suzuki.
Reika Ito x Yasuhiro Suzuki | Spiritual Dialogue (Part 2) "You're paving the way for those who want to become creators and express themselves, aren't you? You'll become a representative for everyone," says Ito. "Your words resonate deeply with me, Ito-san, and gave me goosebumps multiple times. Several things became clear today for the first time, and I want to use them as a reference for my future activities," says Suzuki.
