The sweet synergy between convertibles and couture.
BEST STYLING 20! The Sweet Relationship Between Open-Top Cars and Fashion
One of the cool female archetypes depicted in movies and novels is the woman who drives, sometimes wildly, sometimes intelligently, and always elegantly. What captivates us about them is primarily their "unexpectedness," but it's meaningless if it doesn't suit them in the first place. While their presence, as if they "wear" cars like accessories, is undeniable, just as we choose shoes to match our style, different cars suit different styles. Here, we focus on ten glamorous open-top cars and asked womenswear stylist Aya Kato and menswear stylist Masamune Nagao to select styles that would suit each. What are the styles that connoisseurs have chosen to "wear" with open-top cars, from both female and male perspectives?
Among Ferrari, the king of "sports cars," this open-top model is highly favored not only by men but also by women due to its architectural rear design. Needless to say, its special performance allows for a serious engagement with driving, but since it's an open-top Ferrari...Ferrari 458 Spider...we want to enjoy the sense of unity with nature and the city. Everyday scenery will surely look different.
With its glossy red body and futuristic form, this was exactly the image that came to mind when I thought of a sports car: theFerrari 458 Spider. It's a design that's like something out of a comic book, so I chose a look from 3.1 Phillip Lim with an American comic book theme, inspired by the name "Spider." It's a perfect match (laughs)!
Aya Kato | KATO Aya Moved to the UK in 2000. Studied under fashion editor Nicola Formichetti in London. After returning to Japan in '03, worked at Vogue Nippon's editorial department, serving as an editor. Became a freelance stylist in '07 and established the studio "iris." Styles for fashion magazines, catalogs, and advertisements, including for OPENERS. OPENERS Blog Updated!
I feel that a strong yet dignified female image suits the "prancing horse" (Ferrari). That brought Joan of Arc, who lived in the Middle Ages, to mind. I selected a look with the theme "a strong fighting woman." The Balmain look, characterized by its menswear-like silhouette and bold print that also evokes a sense of Japanese aesthetics, conveys the strength of spirit reminiscent of knights from her era or Japanese samurai. While an open-top car itself draws attention, a woman like this driving it would be truly aspirational, even for a man.
Masamune Nagao | NAGAO Masamune After working as an assistant editor and editor at a publishing company, became an independent fashion editor and stylist in 2003. Served as creative director for a bag brand in '06, then expanded his work to include planning, editing, and styling for magazines, as well as producing fashion brand advertisements and catalogs, corporate advertising, and costume styling for TV commercials. http://www.masamunenagao.com/
The pinnacle and representative of luxury open-top cars,Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. This "SLS AMG" is a sporty, ultra-high-performance model that more strongly evokes the image of the "300SL," which debuted in 1954 and is the origin of the "SL." While "SL" originally meant "Sport, Lightweight," Mercedes-Benz's policy also includes elegance and luxury. The "SLS AMG," which is even faster and more premium than the "SL," is a truly special vehicle that excites the heart of its driver.
For the "king of open-top cars," the ultimate luxury vehicle, I selected a Chanel collection by the king of fashion, Karl Lagerfeld. Conversely, I couldn't think of any other car that would be as fitting for Chanel as this "Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG." Its unique gold sheen reflects on the dazzling white body... it exudes a nobility befitting a "king."
For the "Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG," with its clean white body and luxurious ambiance, I selected a style that is intelligent, elegant, yet uniquely individual. The clean white body and the beautiful contrast of royal blue, along with the baroque-inspired print that connects to this season's trends, create an image of dignity and individuality. While it's a pants look that's easy to drive in, the refined quality that prevents it from being overly sporty is also a key point.
MINI Cooper S Convertible | MINI Cooper S Convertible
The "MINI" is most appealing for its design, and many people likely buy it for its cute appearance, but they certainly won't regret it once they drive it. Its compact and practical body carries the spirit of a British sports car, eager to race along with the driver. Among the many body variations, this "MINI Cooper S Convertible" we selected carries over the trunk hinge inherited from the old MINI." title="008_mini_car" data-src="/galleries/images/000/085/306/medium/b73701ad-53ab-4ae0-903f-4f6bfcd377fb.jpg">
MINI Cooper S Convertible | VIKTOR&ROLF
The "MINI Convertible," being British in origin, design, and image, is the most quintessentially British car. I wanted to pair it with a "proper" British style that is more menswear-like and less revealing than a dress. While it has a classical feel, the distinctive Victorian silhouette created by the exaggerated bell sleeves also lends a mysterious air, which, to me, connects to the world of "Harry Potter" – also very British (laughs).
For the "MINI Convertible," with its charmingly pop and graphical design, I selected a look that also features a graphical design. I chose this purely based on the visual impression of who would look cool driving this car! It's my favorite combination among this selection!
"Everything a car needs today is here." That's the Volkswagen Golf. And its open-top version isVolkswagen Golf Cabriolet. With seating for four, it's suitable for families or outings with friends, making it an easy-to-use car for everyone. The name "Golf" originates from the Gulf Stream and trade winds, so it's meant to be driven with the wind in your hair!
For the "Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet," with its European design and approachable feel,Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, I envisioned a style that is intelligent, creative, and a little bit playful. The look, which deconstructs a "good girl" British style of button-down shirt, cardigan, and glasses, is exactly as I imagined. The slightly oversized glasses are also funny and good!
For a car with simple, basic charm, I'd want a unique woman to drive it. Someone who doesn't just chase trends but skillfully incorporates the essence of the times while maintaining her own style. Perhaps the timeless appeal of Volkswagen and Marni are similar in that regard. And perhaps it's brands like these that remain beloved without fading.
Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet | Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet
Porsche 911is a unique existence that balances top-tier sports performance with practicality. Among them,911 Carrera Cabrioletis a model that is highly popular not only overseas but also in Japan among women. While retaining its smart and elegant design, it has evolved to be more glamorous and luxurious with the latest technology. It's a car that makes you want to enjoy the time filled with the joy of driving forever.
While a "Porsche convertible" can seem a bit flashy when driven by a man, it has a surprisingly different impression when driven by a woman. I envision a woman who is perfect in every aspect, from her career to her fashion. The silhouette of a "capable woman" with a fitted jacket and a tight skirt is impeccable, but the waist ribbon adds a touch of femininity and cuteness within that perfection.
I imagined a sophisticated woman who truly "wears" her convertible, someone who turns heads. For her, the car is merely an accessory. While the "bright red convertible" offers plenty of glamour, the "Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's" sleek, unadorned design maximizes her presence.Porsche 911 Carrera Cabrioletenhances her presence to the fullest.
Aston Martin is known as James Bond's car, representing British supercars. With its luxurious interior crafted from high-quality materials, design imbued with craftsmanship in every detail, and overwhelming driving performance, this model, praised by car enthusiasts as "elegantly savage," embodies the aesthetic sensibilities of the British, much like James Bond himself – intelligent, elegant, and capable of handling a shootout.
Known as James Bond's car, I naturally chose a "Bond girl" image for the "Aston Martin." The sharp silver body with black leather is a tough combination, and the sexy styling of a bustier dress and long gloves is pure Bond girl! I can picture her speeding fearlessly around sharp turns, foot on the accelerator.
Speaking of "Aston Martin," it's James Bond, so I imagined a Bond girl (laughs). For an intelligent, elegant, and sexy Bond girl, I'd want her in Alber Elbaz's designs. The car's beautifully curved silhouette is also sexy, making it perhaps the "ultimate passenger car" to highlight a woman's allure (laughs). And of course, James Bond in a tuxedo would be in the driver's seat.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible | Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept
A stylish model from the king of off-road car brands, Range Rover,Range Rover Evoque. This special edition, the "Convertible Concept," is an open-top version of the "Range Rover Evoque," which is also very popular among creators. Although it's not scheduled for sale yet, it has a powerful form unusual for an open-top car. This distinctive appearance must be what appeals to creators.
Because the car has a rugged, tough impression, I deliberately chose an intelligent and smart style to create an unexpected contrast. While I considered the British feel appropriate for a British car, I didn't want it to be too subdued, so I selected a look that is smart yet has a playful touch. I focused on the jacket's structured shoulders that match the car's volume and the square silhouette created by the wide-leg pants.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible | Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci
The car's design, reminiscent of futuristic vehicles from "Star Wars," left a strong impression, so I selected a look that also has a futuristic feel. Furthermore, because it conveyed a strong creative image beyond just being "luxurious," I envisioned a unique style with a "twist" of creativity within its elegance, exuding an aura of being "more than meets the eye."
This car, born in France, is as discerning about practicality and design as a true Parisian. Its sleek silhouette for enjoying a refreshing drive and its refined, minimalist world elegantly enhance any driving scene. " title="022_peugeot_car" data-src="/galleries/images/000/085/320/medium/abc13766-23f0-42c1-bf1f-188127819813.jpg">
Peugeot 308 CC | Dior
French chic. I imagined the understated beauty of a French actress, an intelligent and sophisticated Parisian woman with her own distinct taste. She has her own style and doesn't need to exaggerate herself with revealing clothes or excessive adornment; everything is effortless. I envision her as a minimalist and elegant woman, but I'd love to see her driving a "Peugeot 308 CC" for everyday shopping!
When I first saw the car, I thought of an elegant woman like Audrey Hepburn. While keeping her image in mind, I also thought it would be fun to combine a monochrome car with a colorful look featuring distinctive patterns. This is my ideal Parisian woman.
CHEVROLET CAMARO CONVERTIBLE | Chevrolet Camaro Convertible
The "Chevrolet Camaro Convertible," an open-top model of the Chevrolet Camaro, is one of the icons of American sports coupes. Beyond its powerful performance, its weighty body and imposing sporty design are highly favored not only by adults who enjoy driving but also by younger generations. " title="025_chevrolet_car" data-src="/galleries/images/000/085/323/medium/d6f2dd25-e8d5-4d33-beff-fb4bd6c6b5b1.jpg">
CHEVROLET CAMARO CONVERTIBLE | Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci
For the "Chevrolet Camaro Convertible," with its heavy form and all-black body, I chose a Givenchy look that plays boldly with impactful prints and daring color combinations that stand out against the black. The story I imagined was a slightly "naughty" young lady sneaking out of her house at night to go out with friends (laughs).
What kind of music would someone driving this car listen to? When I imagined that, I suddenly thought of will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas. A hooded rider jacket with a skirt and thigh-high boots... that's a very advanced styling. If a woman like this were driving, with hardcore hip-hop blasting as the background music... it would be breathtaking.
rolls-royce phantom-II | Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Series II
The "Phantom Drophead Coupe," an open-top car from the pinnacle of the automotive world, Rolls-Royce. It's a "Rolls-Royce to drive yourself," boasting a luxurious design, an interior crafted with exquisite materials, and performance that satisfies even car enthusiasts. The design, featuring strategically placed wooden elements and evoking a "boat," is perfect for a yacht owner heading to the harbor.
Since I felt this wasn't a car to be driven by oneself (laughs), I wanted to pair it with a voluminous, ornate dress. I specifically chose something with a couture feel. The image is of a car that makes you forget it's a car, a "car that can be adorned endlessly." While I considered luxurious fur or a glamorous long dress suitable for the red carpet, I chose this look with its beautiful, delicate lace, believing that a couture dress, imbued with craftsmanship, is most fitting for the highest quality car.
For Rolls-Royce, the undisputed pinnacle of luxury, I wanted to pair it with something couture, something that evokes the splendor of haute couture. If someone like this were to emerge from this car... the sheer impact would leave one speechless (laughs).
