Mitsubishi's world premiere models at this year's show were the compact car "Mirage" and the plug-in hybrid SUV "Concept PX-MiEV II." Under the concept of "For your world, For our earth," they presented an exhibition focused on environmentally friendly vehicles designed to coexist with society and the planet.
The Great East Japan Earthquake has prompted a global reevaluation of energy policies. Currently, attention is focused on utilizing batteries from electric vehicles as storage systems to ensure a stable supply of electricity from "renewable energy" sources like solar and wind power.
The Concept PX-MiEV II serves as a prototype for realizing this vision. The electricity stored in its battery can be accessed via an in-car outlet to power electrical devices outdoors or provide an emergency power source. It is also designed to supply power to homes.
Following the i-MiEV, Mitsubishi recently launched the "MINICAB-MiEV," a light commercial EV. Based on the communication words "Drive @ earth" – "Driving the Earth," "Living with the Earth" – Mitsubishi continues its commitment to creating vehicles that are gentle on people, society, and the planet.

This system, based on the technology used in electric vehicles like the i-MiEV, extends driving range by generating electricity with an engine when necessary.
This Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid EV System automatically selects one of three driving modes based on driving conditions. In "EV Drive Mode" for low to medium-speed driving, the vehicle runs primarily on the drive battery. When the battery capacity decreases or strong acceleration is required, the 2-liter, four-cylinder engine mounted at the front starts up to generate electricity, supplying power to the motors on the front and rear axles and the battery in "Series Drive Mode." For high-speed driving, "Parallel Drive Mode" is selected, where the motor assists the engine. The Concept PX-MiEV II reportedly achieves an EV driving range of 50 km, a maximum cruising range of 800 km, and fuel efficiency of over 60 km/L. (Currently, these figures are targets.)

Specifically, lightweighting has been implemented in detail, such as the use of high-tensile steel plates for body panels, achieving what is said to be a top-class lightweight body for a 5-seater, 5-door hatchback. The powertrain features a newly developed 1-liter, 3-cylinder engine equipped with technologies like variable valve timing (MIVEC), an idling stop system, and a regenerative braking system, combined with thorough lightweighting and friction reduction measures. As a result, it achieves fuel efficiency of 30 km/L.
