Volkswagen Group Japan CEO Gerasimos Dorizas began the Volkswagen conference by stating their aim to be the number one imported car company, and their future plans to expand their lineup of ecological cars, comparable to hybrids, powered by TSI engines and DSG transmissions, which have already been fully introduced. This time, the two world premiere models were the "Passat Alltrack" and the "Cross Coupé." A special edition of "The Beetle," which had its Japan premiere, was also unveiled, equipped with a sound system from guitar brand Fender.

This coupe-style SUV is equipped with electric motors and a TSI engine, allowing it to run purely on electric power for distances up to 40 km. It boasts a low fuel consumption of 2.7 L/100 km and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds. A technical highlight is its rear electric motor system: when one motor is driving, the other acts as a generator powered by the TSI engine to supply energy.
Externally, its length is between that of the Golf and the Tiguan. The rearward-positioned cabin and roof achieve both ample space and a sharp image.
A notable design feature is the front, where the chrome fins of the radiator grille are integrated with the headlights. This face is said to become the signature look for Volkswagen's SUVs in the future. The chief designer described it as a sculpted and dynamic design, as if carved from a solid block of metal.

Positioned to fill the gap between SUVs like the Passat Variant and Tiguan, it features an exterior with SUV-style bumpers, wheel arches, and side sills, along with ramp breakover and approach angles suitable for rough roads, and high ground clearance. It is designed as a versatile vehicle for both city driving and off-road use, with a spacious interior, and is scheduled for release in Europe from spring 2012.
