Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
This time, I saw six shows: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I left New York on Friday and returned to Japan on Saturday. The very next day, I was back to work (laughs). Despite such a demanding schedule, I was thoroughly satisfied with my New York trip this year! The Broadway offerings were abundant, and with the Tony Awards having just passed, the city was brimming with energy. Tickets were hard to come by. I spent a fortune... (cries).
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 10 (Sun) "Anything Goes"
It was a revival, but Sutton Foster, who won her second Tony Award for Best Actress in this role, was simply stunning with her beauty, powerful voice, flawless breath control, and that triumphant smirk (laughs). "Anything Goes" holds special memories for me, as I once performed in the Toho musical adaptation starring Mao Daichi. It was deeply moving to recall my own dancing in that production. And I was thrilled to see the legendary Joel Grey! I'm a lucky woman to have seen him on the Broadway stage so many times. Joel was born in 1932. He's 79. Amazing!
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 12 (Tues)
Lunch at the Sofitel Hotel. This is the hotel where the former IMF chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, caused a stir recently (laughs).
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 12 (Tues) "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"
I was in a panic when I couldn't get tickets at the theater's box office! I had to resort to a special measure (?) and barely made it in. I paid $250 for a second-tier seat that was originally $98... (cries). But I was very satisfied! Daniel Radcliffe, who is so popular, surprised me with his excellent singing and dancing. His acting was superb, and he was full of playful charm! It was hard to believe this was his musical debut. I'm so glad I saw it. Since everyone knows him from the "Harry Potter" series, the audience seemed to be watching him with parental affection (laughs).
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 13 (Wed) "Catch Me If You Can"
Norbert Leo Butz, who won his second Tony Award for Best Actor, was absolutely wonderful. I was captivated by the dance number he performed at the Tony Awards ceremony, which was broadcast in Japan! The depth of talent among Broadway actors is incredible. Regardless of age or appearance, they can all sing and dance. So cool! It was a matinee performance, but he gave it his all. This was my top pick of the trip.
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 13 (Wed) "War Horse"
This was the only straight play I saw. I didn't understand a word, but I really wanted to see it. This British production won five Tony Awards this year. The movement of the horse puppets was incredibly realistic. I absolutely had to see it. It was truly beautiful, in a very British way. I booked my tickets from Japan. It cost around $600... (cries).
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
July 14 (Thurs) "The Book of Mormon"
This was one of the highlights of my trip. This musical won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Like "War Horse," tickets were difficult to obtain. I might have paid the most I ever have for a ticket... over $1000. That's more than the $700 I paid for the original production of "The Producers." It's tough for short-term travelers... (cries). I could probably see it again if I came next year, but the cast might change, so I was determined to see it now. The show was outrageously funny, the songs were superb, and I left feeling exhilarated.
Keiko Toda | Looking Back on a Hectic Yet Fulfilling Summer, Part 2: A Broadway Binge in New York!
My time off ended all too quickly. This year, there were so many great shows that I still feel I didn't see enough. I'm already longing to go back! This year, I was able to travel with my childhood friend, Yuji Mitsuya, who has gotten a little older (and heavier) (laughs). I slept, I watched, I watched, and I slept. New York is still New York, but I returned on the 16th with a renewed determination to work hard so I can go again! I was able to refresh, relax, and reset!!
