PASS THE BATON GALLERY - FREITAG's FUNDAMENTALS
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - Recycled Truck Tarp / Annual usage: 300 tons (equivalent to a line of 95km of trucks)
After serving their initial purpose for an average of 5-8 years as tarps for transport trucks crisscrossing European highways, these materials are not discarded as industrial waste. Instead, FREITAG 'Recontextualizes' them, transforming them into the main fabric for bags. They then embark on a second life, not on trucks, but carried on the backs of people with different speeds and destinations.
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - Recycled Car Seatbelt / Annual usage: 80,000 belts
Used as straps for FREITAG bags. Because they are recycled materials, they conform comfortably to the shoulder from the very first use. Suppliers range from European and Japanese car manufacturers. Consequently, the weave of the belts varies from bag to bag. The design of the woven label tags sewn onto the seatbelts, offering a glimpse into their past, also varies interestingly by manufacturing year. This distinctly reflects Switzerland, a mecca of graphic design.
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - Recycled Bicycle Innertube / Annual usage: 35,000 tubes
Bicycle inner tubes serve as piping (edging) for the bags. By using colorful truck tarps as the main fabric and incorporating the corporate color black for the logos, straps, piping, and Velcro, FREITAG enhances not only functionality but also the bag's design.
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - Hardbrücke
The heart of FREITAG, located next to Zurich's main train station in Switzerland. For 18 years since FREITAG's founding, tarps have been collected, washed, cut, and packed at the 'F-FACTORY' on one side of this bridge. On the other side stands the 'F-SHOP ZURICH,' a flagship store 26 meters high, built from stacked used shipping containers, serving as a landmark in Zurich.
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - F13 TOP CAT / Produced in 1993
The first messenger bag, inheriting the shape, size, and functionality of prototypes made by the FREITAG brothers. They obtained truck tarps, before recycling was a common concept, from a transport company, brought them home in a wheelbarrow, washed them in a bathtub, cut them in the living room, and sewed them with their mother's sewing machine. A masterpiece of FREITAG's classic messenger series, it was acquired by the Zurich Design Museum in 1997 and joined the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 2003.
PASS THE BATON GALLERY - F14 DEXTER / Produced in 2006
After creating the first model, 'F13 TOP CAT,' the FREITAG brothers released two smaller models, 'F12 DRAGNET' (M size) and 'F11 LASSIE' (S size), in 1994 and 1995 respectively, maintaining the same functionality and design. The hallmark of the classic messenger is its expandable feature, allowing the tarp folded inside to be extended when the bag's capacity increases. The bag's shape and the visibility of its pattern change with each use. This 'F14 DEXTER' is an intermediate size between S and M, with divided pockets, catering to modern individuals who carry various gadgets.
