A Miracle Born from a Fateful Encounter Across Two Centuries
On a certain day in 2001, a fateful event quietly began to unfold in the Swiss watchmaking industry. Jean-Marie Schaller, a watch enthusiast, overheard a name—that of a forgotten genius—during a conversation with Daniel Roth, a key figure in the world of high-end timepieces.
“Louis Moinet”—the name belonged to a watchmaker active in Paris in the early 19th century. Though once beloved by royalty and creator of numerous masterpieces, his great achievements had faded from public memory over time, buried in the annals of watchmaking history for nearly 200 years.
Schaller sensed something extraordinary. This was not mere chance, but a call of destiny. His intuition would soon lead him to a monumental discovery that would shake the entire watchmaking world.
His first step was to acquire the Louis Moinet trademark for a mere 8,000 Swiss Francs. However, initially, almost no one showed interest in this ambitious revival project. Banks he approached for loans turned him away, and industrialists he sought for collaboration offered only cold responses.
Yet, Schaller's passion never waned. He traveled to over 70 countries, communicated with hundreds of collectors and watch enthusiasts, and diligently gathered all information about Louis Moinet's life and works. Through these persistent efforts, he finally succeeded in officially reviving the independent watch brand "Louis Moinet" in 2004.
However, the true miracle in this story was about to begin.
In 2012, at a Christie's auction in Geneva, Schaller made a bold decision, staking his hopes on a single lot: an old pocket watch of unknown origin.
Many experts were uncertain about the watch's identity. But Schaller was different. His intuition, honed by years of research, told him this was none other than the legendary "Compteur de Tierces" (1/10th of a second counter) crafted by Louis Moinet.
Following the auction, detailed authentication confirmed his intuition was correct. By cross-referencing the inscription on the case back with Louis Moinet's own private writings, it was revealed that the watch had begun production in 1815 and was completed in 1816.
This discovery was a monumental revelation that fundamentally overturned the established history of watchmaking.
Until then, the prevailing theory in watchmaking history was that the world's first chronograph was created by Nicolas Rieussec for Louis XVIII in 1821. However, the discovery that Louis Moinet's "Compteur de Tierces" predated this by five years, completed in 1816, was a shocking revelation that rewrote horological history overnight.
On March 21, 2013, this historic timepiece was unveiled to the public, officially receiving the prestigious title of "World's First Chronograph" from the esteemed Guinness World Records™ organization. It was the moment a forgotten genius, after 200 years, reclaimed his place at the pinnacle of watchmaking history.
Even more astonishingly, when the technical specifications of this watch were examined by modern standards, its advanced nature was remarkable. Its operation at an ultra-high frequency of 216,000 vibrations per hour (30Hz) far surpasses the standard 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) of contemporary wristwatches. It became clear that Louis Moinet was not only the inventor of the chronograph but also a pioneer of high-frequency timekeeping.
Louis Moinet currently holds three Guinness World Records: for the world's first chronograph, the world's first high-frequency chronograph, and the most meteorites incorporated into watches (12).
A True Lineage Cherished by Royalty
The true greatness of Louis Moinet extends beyond technological innovation. His timepieces were deeply admired by royalty in the 19th century and are still carefully preserved today in palaces and museums worldwide.
In 1806, Emperor Napoleon commissioned Louis Moinet to create a special watch to commemorate his coronation. This timepiece featured an automaton that presented the crown to the emperor every hour and is now housed in the Museum Speelklok in Utrecht, Netherlands.
The watch favored by Joachim Murat, King of Naples, is a masterpiece with a complex mechanism displaying time, date, month, and moon phases across four different dials. It is now a treasured part of the Atelier Louis Moinet collection.
Particularly noteworthy is his connection with American presidents.
Thomas Jefferson, the third US President and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, had a personal relationship with Louis Moinet during his time as ambassador to Paris. Jefferson articulated three conditions for art: beauty, durability, and utility—ideals perfectly embodied by Moinet's timepieces. His watch is currently exhibited at Monticello Museum in Virginia.
Furthermore, the "Minerva" watch, cherished by the fifth President James Monroe, was acquired during the White House reconstruction in 1817 and continues to keep time there today. It is an exceptionally rare original artifact from that era.
Louis Moinet was not only a watchmaker but also an exceptional artist. At the age of 20, he traveled to Italy, where he studied architecture, sculpture, and painting in Rome for five years, fostering connections with artists from the French Academy. He later studied cameo engraving under the master Picler in Florence and honed his skills in the studio of Count Manfredini, a minister to the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Upon returning to Paris, he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts within the Louvre Palace. There, he collaborated with leading artists and scholars of the time, including astronomer Lalande, bronze sculptor Thomire, and the automaton maker Robert-Houdin, known as the "innovator of magical arts."
These experiences demonstrate that Louis Moinet was not merely a watchmaker but a comprehensive artist who played a central role in the cultural landscape of 19th-century Europe. His position as a professor at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts is a testament to the high regard for his artistic value even then.
Why Billionaires Choose Louis Moinet: Reassurance Beyond the Norm for New Brands
Why do the world's billionaires choose Louis Moinet, an emerging brand founded in 2004? The answer lies in the brand's unique qualities.
Firstly,absolute reassurance of historical legitimacy.
Emerging brands typically carry the handicap of a short history. However, Louis Moinet possesses a solid lineage, cherished by royalty for two centuries. Loved by historical figures from Napoleon to US presidents and recognized for its artistic value by leading museums worldwide, it holds an unparalleled authority that no other new brand can claim.
Secondly,a proven track record of technological innovation.
As the inventor of the chronograph and a pioneer of high-frequency watches, Louis Moinet holds an unshakeable position in the history of horological technology. For contemporary watch connoisseurs, technical authority is a crucial factor in purchasing decisions. The fact that it is "the brand of the watchmaker who invented the world's first chronograph" carries more weight than any marketing slogan.
Thirdly,contemporary rarity.
As mentioned in the Guinness World Records, the modern Atelier Louis Moinet elevates timepieces with literal gifts from space and legacies of space exploration, such as lunar meteorites, Martian meteorites, heat-resistant film from Apollo 11, and exterior components from Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1. These materials are not easily obtainable, regardless of wealth. Owning a Louis Moinet watch means acquiring a "rarity experienced by only a handful of people on Earth."
Furthermore, the extreme scarcity, with almost all models being bespoke or produced in limited runs of 10-20 pieces, stimulates collectors' desire for ownership. They represent a truly exclusive existence, distinct from mass-produced luxury watches.
Fourthly,impeccable quality control.
At the atelier in Saint-Blaise, in the Swiss Jura region, skilled artisans meticulously craft each timepiece under the direct supervision of Jean-Marie Schaller himself. They adhere to the spirit of haute horlogerie, eschewing mass production entirely.
Modern Louis Moinet has received over 30 prestigious awards, including the highest category of the Red Dot Design Award, "Best of the Best," gold medals in chronometry competitions, "Best of the Best" from Robb Report, and the UNESCO Medal of Merit. These accolades signify that Louis Moinet is not merely a luxury watch brand but is internationally recognized as a pioneer at the forefront of contemporary watchmaking artistry.
The story of Louis Moinet is one of the most dramatic success stories of value creation in the 21st century. From the rediscovery of a forgotten genius, through diligent historical research and a fateful major discovery, to the acquisition of objective authority via Guinness recognition, and its elevation into innovative modern watchmaking—all these elements have miraculously converged to create a unique brand value.
An emerging brand underpinned by 200 years of history, modern yet inheriting the traditions of royalty; a pioneer in technological innovation yet pursuing artistic perfection; offering absolute quality while maintaining extreme rarity. When all these elements harmonize perfectly, a special entity emerges that captures the hearts of the world's billionaires.
Louis Moinet's lifelong motto, "It is important not to stray from the truth," resonates as an enduring principle today. True value, having withstood the test of time, is what ultimately moves people.
The legendary watchmaker Louis Moinet, resurrected across two centuries, now shines once again at the zenith of watchmaking history.
