Jewelry Special: An Homage to Nature and Rachel Carson

Sharpening Your Sense of Wonder

Rachel Carson, the writer, nurtured a "sense of wonder"—an ability to marvel at the beautiful, the unknown, and the mysterious—by exploring nature with her children and feeling their excitement of discovery. The stories woven here are odes to the mystery and beauty of life, inspired by the natural world that Rachel surely would have found, through jewelry and costume jewelry.

Jewelry That Celebrates Nature

“The world of children is always vibrant, fresh, and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Unfortunately, many of us, before we grow up, dull or even lose our clear insight and our intuitive sense of the beautiful and the awe-inspiring.

If I had the power to speak to the benevolent fairy who watches over the growth of all children, I would ask her to bestow upon every child the lifelong gift of a "sense of wonder"—an ability to marvel at the mysterious and the wondrous.

This sense will be an unfailing antidote to the ennui and disillusionment that come with adulthood, to our distancing from the wellspring of nature's power, and to our absorption in trivial, artificial things.”
From "The Sense of Wonder" (Author: Rachel Carson, Translator: Keiko Kanto, Publisher: Shinchosha)

These are words from "The Sense of Wonder," the final work by Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring."

Perhaps what we need now is time to connect with nature, to contemplate it.

Rachel also writes in this book that those who deeply contemplate the beauty of the Earth will maintain a vibrant spirit until the very end of their lives.

“In bird migration, in the ebb and flow of the tides, in the hard buds that await the spring, there is a beauty that is symbolic and mysterious, as well as a beauty in itself. In nature's refrain—the certainty that morning follows night, that spring comes after winter—there is something that can heal us endlessly.”
From "The Sense of Wonder" (Author: Rachel Carson, Translator: Keiko Kanto, Publisher: Shinchosha)

In this feature, we present jewelry that incorporates natural materials or motifs, jewelry that gently encapsulates a "sense of wonder."

With a little conscious effort to sharpen our senses—the ability to appreciate beauty, the thrill of encountering something new or unknown—our everyday lives may transform into something wonderful.
