Senator Sixties
Text by OPENERS
Unveiled in 2007, the Senator Sixties was met with exceptional acclaim from the press and industry insiders. Initially offered only as a three-hand model, the collection steadily expanded with the addition of a chronograph the following year, and a square chronograph in 2009.
Here, we first introduce the three-hand model. As the name "Sixties" suggests, its design is vintage-inspired, serving as an homage to the 1960s, a golden age for mechanical watches. The domed dial, curving outwards, offers a unique sense of warmth, with the tip of the seconds hand subtly bent to match. High-quality sapphire crystal is used for the crystal, and the deliberate curving of this exceptionally hard material into a dome further enhances its antique aesthetic.
The see-through case back also features a domed sapphire crystal shaped to complement the rotor, giving the watch a slimmer profile from the side than its actual thickness might suggest. The movement is Caliber 39-52, equipped with a swan-neck regulator, a three-quarter plate, and a skeletonized rotor with a 21-karat gold weight. While the front presents a charming, vintage face, the back reveals the full splendor of a mechanical watch, offering a luxurious experience from every angle.
The dials are available in silver and black. Each comes with either a stainless steel case or an 18k red gold case, resulting in a basic lineup of four variations. The strap is made of alligator leather, its distinctive grain featuring large, raised circular patterns, further enhancing the 1960s aesthetic.
Automatic winding. 28,800 vibrations per hour. Approximately 40-hour power reserve. Case diameter 39.2mm. Stainless steel case. Alligator strap. 3 ATM water resistance. ¥787,500.
18k red gold case. ¥1,617,000.
BRAND HISTORY
Since Ferdinand Adolph Lange established his watchmaking workshop in 1845, Glashütte has been the heart of the German watchmaking industry. After World War II, the town's state-owned factory, G.U.B., produced watches as industrial goods under the East German administration. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, brands gradually emerged to revive the traditional watchmaking heritage passed down from former court watchmakers. Glashütte Original was one of the first brands to embark on this endeavor.
In 1994, former CEO Heinz W. Pfeiffer acquired the privatized G.U.B. and fundamentally reformed its mass-production system. He shifted to a quality-focused, small-batch production model, debuting as Glashütte Original at the Baselworld trade show the following year.
The brand's timepieces feature Glashütte's characteristic three-quarter plate finish and swan-neck regulator, imbuing them with a handmade warmth. They also incorporate functional, robust German watchmaking designs such as off-center dials and panorama date displays.
Since 2000, the brand has been part of the Swatch Group, and its Japanese operations began in 2002. Offering a wide range of products from sporty models to complex timepieces, Glashütte Original continues to showcase its exceptional technical prowess rooted in the traditional watchmaking of Saxony, notably developing its own split-seconds chronograph mechanism in 2007.
