Citizen sponsors the 2017 US Open Tennis Championships, announcing a partnership with tennis legend Billie Jean King.
Citizen is sponsoring the US Open Tennis Championships, currently being held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, as the Official Timekeeper.
We have served as the Official Timekeeper for this tournament since 1993, marking our 25th anniversary this year.
At the tournament, in addition to supporting match operations with official timing, Citizen will set up a dedicated booth at the venue.
This space will be used for product presentations and brand experiences, fostering communication with attendees throughout the event.
This year, our 25th anniversary as Official Timekeeper, we have formed a partnership with Billie Jean King, renowned as an advocate for gender equality and social justice, and recognized as one of LIFE magazine's "100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century."
Billie Jean King, a legendary player who dominated women's tennis from the 1960s to the 1980s, is also known for her historic match against a male tennis player, a victory that left an indelible mark on sports history.
This match, dubbed the "Battle of the Sexes" in the U.S. at the time, recorded the highest viewership for a televised sporting event, contributing to increased social recognition for women's tennis and gender equality.
Even after her retirement, Billie Jean King has continued her social contributions by running an NPO (Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative) to foster leadership, and for her achievements, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
The film "Battle of the Sexes," starring Emma Stone and depicting her remarkable journey, is scheduled for release in theaters across multiple countries, including the UK and Australia, beginning in the U.S. in September 2017.
To commemorate the partnership with Billie Jean King, Citizen plans to sell a limited-edition Billie Jean King commemorative watch at the Citizen booth at the US Open and through the USTA's online shop.
