Dance company "DAZZLE," renowned for its unparalleled originality and innovative expression, which has garnered numerous awards both domestically and internationally, will present "Yaso Hyakumonogatari," a 360-degree immersive online theater experience, on select dates starting February 27, 2021.
DAZZLE, a dance company that continues to challenge new forms of entertainment beyond conventional boundaries, not only in the dance world but also with its unique worldview and expressive power. They have also collaborated with Living National Treasures.
Formed in 1996, DAZZLE is a dance company that consistently creates original works under the slogan, "Dazzling, belonging to all categories, yet none." They pursue a unique style that fuses street dance and contemporary dance, crafting narrative-driven pieces that actively incorporate elements of Japanese culture such as films, comics, and games. To deliver dance to a wider audience beyond just dance enthusiasts, they constantly expand its possibilities through cutting-edge methods, aiming to realize "open dance."
They won the championship at "Legend Tokyo (2011)," which determines Japan's best dance entertainment. Their acclaimed work "Hana to Odori" received the Grand Prix at the "Green Festa" theater festival and an Excellence Award at the Young Director's Competition, earning high praise not only from the dance community but also from the theater world. They have also actively performed overseas, with productions staged at "SAMJOKO Asian Theater Festival (2010, South Korea)," "Sibiu International Theatre Festival (2011, Romania)," one of the world's three major theater festivals, and "Fadjr International Theater Festival (2012, Iran)," the largest theater festival in the Middle East. Their performances garnered standing ovations, and at the "Fadjr International Theater Festival," they received two awards: the Special Jury Prize and the Stage Design Award. In 2015, they collaborated with Kabuki actor and Living National Treasure Tamasaburo Bando.
In recent years, they have focused on immersive theater, a popular experiential performance format in London and New York, and have presented numerous works as pioneers in Japan. Beyond their own productions like "Touch the Dark" (2017), set in an abandoned hospital, and "SHELTER" (2019) featuring multiple endings, they have created many works offering new experiences, including the collaboration with ONE PIECE TOWER, "Toki no Hako ga Hiraku Toki" (2018), and "Sakurahime" (2020) performed at Minamiza Theatre in Kyoto. Furthermore, "Venus of TOKYO," a year-long permanent performance, is scheduled to be held at VenusFort in Odaiba starting April 2021.
A new sensory horror x dance experience based on "Hyakumonogatari," a traditional Japanese ghost story gathering, offering a sense of presence beyond reality?!
"Yaso Hyakumonogatari" is an online immersive theater experience inspired by Hyakumonogatari, a traditional Japanese ghost story gathering. DAZZLE, which has been leading the way in immersive theater in Japan for several years (immersive performances where the audience moves freely within the theater, witnessing scenes that unfold simultaneously as part of the production), will realize an online experiential performance using the VR distribution app "REALIVE360." With 4K high-definition 360-degree video that allows viewers to freely select their viewing angle, it offers a realistic experience as if you have traveled into the world of the performance and are present in the space as a participant in Hyakumonogatari.
It is said that when a hundred ghost stories are told, a real supernatural phenomenon appears. In "Yaso Hyakumonogatari," upon purchasing a ticket, you can choose and vote for one of the 14 stories you wish to see (※). The main performance will consist of the top 7 most popular stories, and the ending will change depending on the combination of stories, resulting in a different narrative each time it is performed. Immersed in a dimly lit Japanese room lit by candles, with your senses heightened by whispers and sounds near your ear that are impossible in reality, witnessing the supernatural events unfolding around you in 360 degrees from your own perspective can be described as a new kind of horror that transcends mere dance or theater. (※ Voting is possible only when purchasing through the DAZZLE Users Site, with a deadline.)
Immerse yourself in the eerie and fantastical world of online immersive theater presented by DAZZLE, and enjoy the latest form of entertainment by sharpening your sight and hearing.
■STORY
I was invited by someone and visited a secluded Japanese house on a new moon night.
"I wish to perform the Hyakumonogatari banquet."
I thought it was a rather eccentric idea, even in the 21st century, but
I decided to participate out of curiosity about what would happen.
Hyakumonogatari is a ghost story game that has been played since ancient times, and it is a form of spirit summoning.
One hundred candles are lit, and with each ghost story told by a participant, a candle is extinguished.
After telling ninety-nine stories, one waits for morning without telling the hundredth.
When all the candles are extinguished, a real supernatural phenomenon appears...
I, who had no ghost stories to tell,
chose a story to be read on my behalf from several options.
Only the titles were given, and I had no idea of the content, but they all seemed ominous...
As the stories began, I realized from the way they were told that this banquet was no mere game.
What is the purpose?
