A tomb that can be moved. "Dan," a tombstone that can be disassembled and relocated, now on sale

Traditionally, a grave has been built on the land where one's ancestors have lived for generations, passed down to children and grandchildren, and protected by successive generations.

However, in recent years, with changes in lifestyles such as the rise of nuclear families, depopulation in rural areas, and an increasing rate of lifelong singlehood, more and more families are facing concerns about grave inheritance.

In response to these modern needs, Ishicho, a company based in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, that sells and installs gravestones, is launching "Dan," a designer gravestone that can be easily moved and relocated.

The designer gravestone "Dan" can be erected without the use of adhesive and its parts can be easily disassembled and reassembled.

Normal gravestones are constructed by bonding multiple stone parts with adhesive. While this creates a sturdy structure, it also makes disassembly difficult, often leading to damage to the stone when moving the grave.

"Dan" is designed so that the overlapping stone parts interlock securely, allowing it to be erected without adhesive and enabling the gravestone to be reused when relocated.

Its design is also inspired by "Soto," which has existed in Japan since the early Nara period.

It stands out as a five-tiered pagoda-shaped gravestone.

The lid for the space where the urn is placed is located at the front and can be opened and closed by sealing only this part with caulking.

With the emergence of the term "haka-jimai" (grave closure), and the growing acceptance of options such as removing one's family grave due to a lack of heirs or choosing not to erect a grave for oneself, "Dan" offers a new style of gravestone that can be passed down through generations for many years.
