Help Harvest Fukui Plums on a Journey: "Fukui Plum Otabel"

In June, when labor shortages often hit plum harvesting season, "Fukui Plum Otabel," a program combining agricultural volunteer work and travel in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture, will be held again this year. The acceptance period is from Wednesday, June 10 to Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and applications are now open.

Expanded to 11 Host Farms This Year

Wakasa Town is known as the largest plum-producing area on the Sea of Japan coast, with a history spanning over 200 years. "Fukui Plum Otabel" began last year with the aim of alleviating the severe labor shortage during harvest season and expanding the fan base for Fukui plums nationwide.

Last year, held as "Fukui Plum Harvest Workation," the program hosted 36 participants across 6 farms. It was well-received as an opportunity to experience agricultural work firsthand. This year, the program has been revamped with a new name and expanded scope, now including 11 host farms, ready to welcome more participants.

This initiative is inspired by "Primary Industry Workation®," organized by the Japan Wellbeing Promotion Association.

For farmers, it offers a solution to labor shortages during their busiest season. For participants, it's an appealing chance to refresh their minds and bodies through immersive plum-picking experiences while feeling the reality of agricultural work.

Fukui plums are a convenient size, neither too large nor too small, and participants find the farm work in the lush green environment to be both mentally and physically refreshing.

Participants can choose from the following three time slots:
Morning: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Afternoon: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Full Day: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

With a range of time options available, participants can also combine their activities with sightseeing in Wakasa Town or the Mikata region, allowing for flexible scheduling that fits their travel plans.

Participation is free of charge; however, travel and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the participant. Applications and the latest information are available via the official LINE account, which can be accessed by scanning a QR code.

Embark on a journey into the world of agriculture in Wakasa Town, the "Town of Plums"—"Fukui Plum Otabel" is gaining attention as a new form of travel that connects people, agriculture, and the region.
