Japan's Largest Participatory Photo Exhibition, "PHOTO IS: Connecting Thoughts. 50,000 People's Photo Exhibition 2018," Now Accepting Submissions!

FUJIFILM's participatory photo exhibition, "PHOTO IS: Connecting Thoughts. 50,000 People's Photo Exhibition," will be held sequentially at 33 venues nationwide, starting with the Tokyo venue on July 13. Submissions will be accepted from March 1 to May 25, in advance of the exhibition.
Unlike typical photo contests, "PHOTO IS: Connecting Thoughts. 50,000 People's Photo Exhibition" is one of Japan's largest participatory photo exhibitions, where every submitted work is guaranteed to be displayed at the venue chosen by the exhibitor. Each photograph will be exhibited alongside the "thoughts captured in the photo" written by the exhibitor.
This exhibition, which began in 2006 as "PHOTO IS: Connecting Thoughts. 10,000 People's Photo Exhibition," has seen a year-on-year increase in both exhibitors and visitors. Last year, the target number of submissions was expanded to "50,000 people."
Last year, a record-breaking 50,507 works were submitted, and over 1.2 million people visited the 36 venues nationwide.

Easier Submissions from Smartphones This Year

This year, as last year, we are accepting submissions for "Large Print Enlargements," "Shuffle Prints" that combine many cherished photos into a single print, and "Cheki Prints" taken with the popular instant camera, "Cheki." Submission categories include the "General Exhibition" category, open to all themes and genres; the "Nostalgic Days" category, for photos that evoke fond memories; and the "Railways in the Landscape" category, for railway-themed photos to be displayed at three major railway museums.
Furthermore, this year, two new categories have been established to allow for easy submissions from smartphones: the "Favorite Shot" category, where users can upload their favorite image and comment via a dedicated website ( http://photo-is.jp/special/), and the "Instagram" category, for submissions via Instagram using a designated hashtag. These new categories offer a way to express thoughts captured in photos not only on social media but also through printed works.

"Kizuna Post" Installed for Handwritten Messages from Visitors to Exhibitors

Under the theme "Connecting Thoughts," this exhibition features a "Kizuna Post" at each venue where visitors can leave handwritten messages for exhibitors. These messages are mailed to the exhibitors by the organizers after the exhibition concludes. Last year, approximately 52,000 messages were received.
Additionally, "100 Selected Works That Resonated" will be held, where 10 selectors will each choose 10 "works that resonated with the heart," totaling 100 pieces from the "General Exhibition" and "Nostalgic Days" categories. These selected works will be specially exhibited at 30 venues nationwide (main and satellite). The selectors include notable figures such as Kaoru Kadoya, Shiro Sano, Ken Noguchi, Suzu Hirose, and Masataka Matsutoya (listed in Japanese alphabetical order), photographers Mineko Orisaku, Yasuaki Kagi, Daishin Kondo, and Uruma Takezawa (listed in Japanese alphabetical order), and art director Kan Mimura.
The submission period is from March 1 to May 25. Why not submit your own cherished memory?
