An 80-year-old traditional townhouse transformed into lodging. Introducing MABUSHI-ya, a machiya guesthouse in Tomioka, a town known for its silk history.
In the city of Tomioka, home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Tomioka Silk Mill, a new lodging facility, MABUSHI-ya, has opened. Renovated from an 80-year-old traditional two-unit townhouse, MABUSHI-ya retains the charm of its old wooden structure while offering a comfortable interior environment, reborn as a welcoming guesthouse.
A unique feature of the facility is the absence of conventional functions like a front desk or dining area. Check-in is handled at a nearby clothing store, and meals are taken at local restaurants. This "Machiya-Yado" (townhouse lodging) approach treats the entire town as part of the accommodation, integrating the guesthouse with the local community to welcome guests collectively.
Tomioka's cityscape boasts not only the World Heritage site but also charming back alleys and shopping streets that share its history. This guesthouse is poised to become a hub for enjoying Tomioka beyond just the World Heritage site. Check the website for details.
