TGC Shizuoka 2020 is here! An interview with STEREO TENNIS, the artist behind the key visual.
The Tokyo Girls Collection Executive Committee (Planning/Production: W TOKYO Inc.) will hold "SDGs Promotion TGC Shizuoka 2020 by TOKYO GIRLS COLLECTION" (hereinafter referred to as "SDGs Promotion TGC Shizuoka 2020") on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at Twin Messe Shizuoka (North Hall Grand Exhibition Hall).
This marks the second year the event has been held in Shizuoka. Last year's TGC Shizuoka aimed to raise awareness and interest in SDGs among a broad audience. In its second year, the theme has been decided as "LET’S TAKE ACTION," reflecting a desire to engage more concretely with SDGs. Various initiatives related to SDGs will be implemented, fostering collective efforts towards achieving the SDGs with all attendees.
The key visual for this year's theme was created by the rising female graphic artist STEREO TENNIS. We spoke with her about the production of the TGC Shizuoka 2020 key visual and other related topics.
What kind of work do you typically do?
Primarily graphic design, but in recent years I've also been involved in art direction, illustration, and production, leveraging my past experiences.
Your style is distinctively reminiscent of the 80s. What inspired this particular aesthetic?
It started around 2004 when a friend and I decided to explore design sources in a genre that no one else was really doing. Initially, people didn't understand its appeal or uniqueness, and I was often met with laughter.
Could you tell us about any specific points you focused on or any production stories related to creating the key visual for TGC Shizuoka 2020?
When I thought of Shizuoka, Mount Fuji, a symbol of Japan, immediately came to mind as a motif. However, I wanted to avoid the overly traditional Japanese imagery often associated with Mount Fuji. Instead, I focused on a color palette that conveyed the pop, glamorous, and lighthearted spirit of TGC.
TGC is promoting SDGs. Are there any specific SDG-related initiatives that have caught your attention?
To be honest, this was the first time I truly understood SDGs. I was deeply impressed by its forward-thinking approach, and the concept of "leaving no one behind" has inspired me to consider what I can do, even in small ways.
What are your thoughts on TGC's involvement with SDGs?
I believe it's incredibly significant that TGC, a show that inspires young women across Japan, is collaborating on such initiatives. It has a unique ability to communicate important messages in a way that is both accessible and engaging. I hope they continue to move forward with this mission in a clear and bold manner.
