Report from trialog's first 1-day event, "trialog summit"
The platform "trialog," a collaboration between Megumi Wakabayashi, content director at blkswn publishers, and Sony, explores next-generation creative lifestyles through "trialogues." On September 15, 2019, trialog hosted its first one-day event, "trialog summit," at Shibuya Hikarie.
This event, the eighth trialog event, was held as an official program of "SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK SHIBUYA 2019" (hereafter SIW), a city-wide event organized by Shibuya Ward.
While SIW's overall theme was "NEW RULES. ~New Values~," the trialog summit, with the aim of considering hints for living in the future alongside the U-30 generation, presented "Alt.Rules Alternative Rules / Alternative to Rules" (Alt. = Alternative: "different from before," "substitute"). It featured four talk sessions on "Information," "Appearance," "Companies," and "Identity" that we truly desire.
The event invited guests such as model Lovely, stylist Shun Watanabe, HIGH(er) magazine editor-in-chief haru., GoodMorning Inc. representative Moemi Sakako, DIGDOG llc. representative Natsuyo Chin, and Dos Monos rapper TAITAN MAN. A total of 12 speakers from various generations and professions engaged in discussion.
Discussing "Modern Rules" from Four Perspectives
Lovely, Shun Watanabe, and Yumiko Sakuma Discuss "The Appearance We Truly Desire"
Lovely on Her Inner and Outer Self: Living Authentically Without Being Swayed by Appearance or Image
Lovely explained that she separates her "outer self as Lovely (the model)" from her "inner self as Izumi Shirahama (the artist)" to convey her messages without the filter of appearance or image, and to protect her space as an identity. Currently, she has shifted her thinking to utilize "Lovely" as a medium, recognizing that "there are people who will listen to Lovely that wouldn't listen to Izumi Shirahama," and to coexist and leverage both personas. She shared that she is now exploring how to use "Lovely" to communicate what she cannot as "Izumi Shirahama."
Lovely and Shun Watanabe also offered advice to those struggling to create their own style: "While having an original style is the coolest, it's important to start by identifying what you like, even if it's through copying at first. Since you might not know your own style initially, you should look at, wear, and try on as many different types of clothes as possible."
Natsuyo Chin, TAITAN MAN, and Megumi Wakabayashi Discuss "The Identity We Truly Desire"
Rethinking the Difficulty of Defining "Authenticity" and "Job Titles" When We Don't Want to Be Categorized or Want to Be Independent Entities
A participant's question, "What is the definition of identity in the first place?" sparked a discussion: "Is it self-cohesion? Individuality? Isn't being bound by such ambiguous concepts actually a trap?" Wakabayashi further clarified the event's theme: "Discussions on what constitutes 'authenticity' or 'essence' can become theological debates. What I wanted to discuss today is how to break free from such thought patterns."
Chin then questioned, "Recently, in my work, I'm frequently asked about my background and where I grew up. Isn't a self-introduction stating my current work and services sufficient? Why has it become common to equate someone's identity with their upbringing or backstory?" She further elaborated, "Japan currently has too few categories and personas. Yet, in an effort to classify, we end up with people and elements disappearing because they don't fit anywhere and are forcibly consolidated."
Music Session and Future Showcase by Sony
In the music session, Jirou Yanase (betcover!!) delivered a special performance as a "musician to watch right now." His performance captivated the audience with his youthful energy at 20 years old, unique sensibility, dynamic vocal range, and compelling lyrics.
Furthermore, at the Future Showcase by Sony, Nozomu Kaji from Sony Music Labels joined a talk session with Hiroki Kobori from Sony's Brand Strategy Department and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, a trialog collaborator, to discuss "PROJECT LINDBERGH," a project across Sony Group aimed at creating new experiences through VR.
Kaji explained the project: "VR content often ends up being just something to watch. However, by creating VR based on real experiences, like Hikaru Utada's concert, we can add value. We are incorporating this perspective into all our content." Mizuguchi added, "We are shifting towards an era of experience. I believe we are entering a time where we can do incredibly interesting things."
At the event venue, four interactive experiences were showcased: one that simulated the feeling of being right in front of Hikaru Utada singing, another allowing visitors to experience being a "dummy head microphone" used by actors and voice actors during recording, and a third that recreated the sensation of being invited to an idol's home party. Many attendees enjoyed these contents, which create unprecedented and diverse forms of proximity with artists, with satisfied expressions.
Moving forward, trialog will continue to conduct experimental initiatives as a creative platform focused on the next generation, with regular developments. Keep an eye on their future activities.
What is trialog?
trialog is a "dialogue" platform for the next generation. Instead of the "dichotomies" that divide society, trialog creates a space for "trialogues" where three parties with different standpoints exchange opinions. Through in-depth discussions on "What is the future we truly desire?", they hold talk events to consider free and creative ways of living for the next generation and the future possibilities.
The event was live-streamed on the official trialog Twitter account, allowing viewers to participate in the dialogue by posting real-time comments online. Archived footage will be available on the official website after the event.
