To achieve both gentle formulation and effective sanitizing and antibacterial performance, Kao focused on the antibacterial properties of "fermented lactic acid," obtained by nurturing and fermenting lactic acid bacteria. By incorporating this naturally derived ingredient into the antibacterial formula, Kao realized 99.9% sterilization and 24-hour antibacterial protection with an alcohol-free, weakly acidic formulation that is gentle on the skin.

The newly released Joan comes in two types: a lightly scented spray type, easy to use over wide areas, formulated with natural rosemary water; and an unscented sheet type, also suitable for wiping hands and around the mouth. Both are weakly acidic, like the skin, making them gentle for families with babies and small children.
