The launch of EST THE LOTION was part of Kao's ongoing reform of its "SOFINA" cosmetics business, initiated in November 2015. This marked the third phase, introducing the foundational skincare line for the department store brand "est." These foundational skincare items, born from SOFINA's advanced technology and expertise, are also recommended for use with the "SOFINA iP Pore Clarifying Hydro-Infusing Serum (Base Serum)," which has been popular since its release in 2015.
During product development, Kao re-examined the environmental conditions faced by modern women's skin. They discovered that indoor environments, such as air-conditioned offices, could be as severely drying as desert conditions. Furthermore, they found that "dryness and flakiness" were the most profound skin concerns for women, and that these concerns were increasing year by year (Kao survey, 2016). Driven by the desire to "keep the skin of all women living in harsh environments hydrated," Kao developed foundational skincare items to address these concerns.

EST THE LOTION is est's ultimate "water-retaining*2 toner," developed by combining the moisturizing power of "Ectoin"—an ingredient produced by extremophiles*1—with over 30 years of SOFINA's research into stratum corneum hydration. Its novel formula binds moisture to the keratin fibers within stratum corneum cells, leading to skin that remains hydrated even in harsh, desert-like environments.
