Fourteen Suite Villas Expressing the Nasu Landscape
At ART BIOTOP, a boutique resort located at the foot of Mt. Nasu in Yokozawa (Tochigi Prefecture), general reservations for the Suite Villas began on Saturday, August 1, 2020. The design of these Suite Villas was handled by Shigeru Ban, one of Japan's leading architects. He is a recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often called the Nobel Prize of architecture, and in 2017, he was the first Japanese person to receive the Mother Teresa Social Justice Award for his extensive social contribution activities.
The fourteen fully independent suite villas (15 rooms), each with a three-meter deep terrace, are arranged to take advantage of the gently sloping terrain, offering direct views of the beautiful streams flowing on either side of the property. Retaining walls made from stones excavated during site development have also been installed around the property, expressing a sense of unity with the land spread at the foot of the Nasu mountain range.
The interiors make extensive use of wood, primarily cedar and ash, creating a warm and inviting space. The bathrooms, designed to extend onto the terrace, feature woven bamboo doors that can be opened towards the terrace, allowing guests to enjoy fresh air baths.
The bedrooms are appointed with bed boards by textile designer Reiko Sudo, the finest mattresses from Iwata Kyoto, and 100% cotton linens. In the morning, a morning basket can be delivered to the room for enjoyment on the terrace, or guests can opt for a Japanese breakfast at the in-residence cafe Kantan. In the afternoon, high tea service is offered in the library lounge adjacent to Restaurant μ, allowing guests to relax and enjoy their check-in time.
Furthermore, each guest room features "Sanka," a small exhibition space showcasing contemporary crafts, art, and carefully selected books based on the experience of operating "Gallery Saku" in Kudanshita, Tokyo. For the opening, a special exhibition titled "Goethe's Eye, or the Dancing Garden," curated by Takashi Niimi, former director of the Oita Prefectural Art Museum and professor at Musashino Art University, will be presented.
At the entrance, a ceramic object by potter Takahiro Kondo is installed. This is the world's first ceramic work made from Okura Sekido, a material favored by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi in his later years. This piece symbolizes the land of Nasu, an entryway to the Tohoku region, and represents a worldview created by human skill and materials. The graphic design for the entire facility, including the ART BIOTOP logo, signage within the grounds, and brochures, was handled by designer Kenya Hara. The text was written by Makoto Saeki, and the concept book for the "Water Garden" in the guest rooms features original photography by Yoshihiko Ueda.
Restaurant μ, adjacent to the Suite Villas, operates with a "seed to table" concept, offering a menu centered on ingredients from the blessed natural surroundings. The kitchen is helmed by rising culinary talents such as Masaru Motooka, who received the "Young Chef to Watch" award in the 2020 edition of the prestigious restaurant guide "Gault & Millau," and Takumi Chiba. Kazuhiro Matsuki, who served as Maître d'Hôtel at Taillevent-Robuchon (now Joël Robuchon), has joined the team, and service is provided by former Niki Club restaurant staff, including Masayuki Muroi, who served for many years at the Niki Club's "Garden Restaurant." Guests can savor new flavors at this restaurant, where the natural surroundings serve as its terroir, overlooking the water garden through the beautiful trees.
