Aman Kyoto Opens in a Secluded Garden in Northern Kyoto | AMAN KYOTO
AMAN KYOTO | AMAN KYOTO
A "Garden of the Forest" Spreads in Northern Kyoto. Aman Kyoto is Finally Here.
On Friday, November 1, 2019, the third Aman in Japan will open. Aman Kyoto is a private resort with 26 guest rooms, nestled discreetly within a "Garden of the Forest" that spreads across northern Kyoto. In this tranquil place, where nature is preserved as it is, guests can experience a deeper charm of the ancient capital, unique to Aman.
Immerse Yourself in Kyoto's Art and Culture at a Sanctuary in the Ancient Capital
At the foot of Mt. Takao, which extends from Mt. Hidari Daimonji in northern Kyoto, a beautiful, forgotten forest and garden will be revived as Aman Kyoto. The Takao area, within walking distance of Kinkaku-ji, is also known as a center of art, where Koetsu Hon'ami, the founder of the Rinpa school, established his residence in the early Edo period. With numerous renowned temples such as Koetsu-ji, Genko-an, and Josho-ji, boasting beautiful tea houses and gardens, it is an ideal location to immerse oneself in Kyoto's art and culture.
Aman Kyoto is situated on a vast site of approximately 320,000 square meters, featuring natural woodland. Following the natural contours of the land along the Kamiya River, Aman Kyoto is a secluded sanctuary where a former owner, dreaming of creating a textile museum, nurtured the garden over many years.
The buildings, designed by Kerry Hill Architects, who also worked on Aman Tokyo and Amanemu, feature minimalist architecture that respects the delicate beauty of the natural garden. The expansive grounds house an arrival pavilion, a living pavilion (all-day dining), a restaurant pavilion (Japanese cuisine), a spa pavilion, four accommodation pavilions with 24 guest rooms, and two pavilions each with a two-bedroom villa. The four two-story accommodation pavilions, integrated into the forest, offer views of the woods and stream through floor-to-ceiling windows. The two villas are perched on a hillside, overlooking maple and cedar trees.
All 26 guest rooms elegantly blend traditional Japanese ryokan aesthetics with modern design, maximizing respect for the natural landscape. All furniture and lighting are custom-made, original designs for Aman Kyoto, and the crafts adorning each space reflect refined Japanese aesthetics and creativity.
Aman Kyoto features two dining facilities. The all-day dining restaurant, "The Living Pavilion by Aman," in the restaurant pavilion, offers views of the garden through an open terrace and a fireplace. Guests can enjoy breakfast, Western dishes, Kyoto-style obanzai, afternoon tea, and even outdoor picnics with meals served in bamboo baskets. The serene open spaces on the property can also be arranged for private dining and wedding events, allowing for memorable experiences in a special setting.
Meanwhile, at the Japanese restaurant "Taka-an," located in Takagamine—an area associated with the extraordinary artist Koetsu Hon'ami—guests can savor exquisite Japanese cuisine made with seasonal ingredients, presented with supreme hospitality where the space, flowers, tableware, and food are harmoniously integrated.
The Aman Spa, featuring a natural hot spring sourced from the vicinity of Aman Kyoto, offers exceptional treatments using natural ingredients long cherished in Japan for beauty and wellness, such as Uji tea, Tamba black soybeans, local sake, cold-pressed camellia oil, silkworm cocoons, and gold leaf. Yoga, meditation, and other exercises can also be enjoyed in the garden's open spaces.
