A Journey into the Heart of Bali, Chapter Two
Amandari
Kudewatan Village, Ubud – Where Spirits Gather in the Forest
“Deep in Bali, Ubud is a place of great importance and affection.”──Ever since visiting Ubud, my friend would speak of Bali with a dreamy gaze, recounting its charms. After experiencing the liberating resort atmosphere atAmanusa, a drive of about an hour and a half brought us to Amandari, located in the village of Kudewatan on the northern outskirts, away from Ubud's bustling center. The second chapter of our journey into the heart of Bali begins.

The Value and Charm of Amandari, Situated at the Center of Balinese Culture
Bali’s most literary town──To put it somewhat poetically, Kudewatan village, where Amandari resides, is a “mystical forest where spirits gather.” The breathtaking views from the private bale (gazebo) overlooking the fertile Ayung River valley, the meticulously maintained, beautiful rice terraces, the architectural style infused with Balinese philosophy, the dense, verdant atmosphere….
Amandari, celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, is a classic among Aman junkies. “Amandari has been nurtured by the hands of Aman junkies, and our staff have honed their service skills to the utmost,” says Siddharth Mehra, General Manager of Amandari.
“Amandari’s main theme is ‘Living with Community.’ It’s a unique resort that offers an experience of living within Kudewatan village, integrating with the community. Seventy percent of Amandari’s staff are residents of Kudewatan village, and we strive for ‘coexistence and co-prosperity’ by creating an environment where residents can work with joy, and by sourcing milk, eggs, and vegetables for our restaurants from the local vicinity.” It is said that girls born in Kudewatan village naturally learn traditional dance at Amandari.
“Amandari is at the heart of Balinese culture, very organic, and a resort where the harmony of environment, people, architecture, and design is perfectly balanced. We have many guests from America, Japan, and Europe (Switzerland, Germany), and approximately 73% of guests also stay at other Amanresorts. We are delighted that our repeat guests, who love Aman, choose to return,” says General Manager Siddharth.
“Because of its intimate scale, we can attend to every guest and staff member, and it is our job to create the guest experience,” the General Manager stated with pride, his words resonating deeply.
The Essence of Amandari (Peaceful Spirit) That Inspires a Day of Doing Nothing
In harmony with the adjacent Kudewatan village, Amandari was an early adopter of the quintessential “Balinese style,” utilizing abundant local materials such as thatched roofing, bamboo roofs, coconut pillars, stone, and wooden floors. The architecture of Amandari has had a profound impact on resort designs worldwide.
The 30 guest rooms, spread across the expansive grounds as if forming a village itself, include Amandari Suites (Asmara Suite/Ayung Suite) and Pool Suites, as well as standard suites available in both single-story and two-story configurations. This architectural masterpiece was designed by architect Peter Müller, who masterfully realized the concept of a “Balinese village” integrated with its natural surroundings.
The dense and intimate atmosphere, embodying the name “Amandari” (meaning peaceful spirit), permeates every corner of our minds and bodies as guests, teaching us that this place exists in harmony with the divine.
Diverse Guest Activities Not to Be Missed
General Manager Siddharth explains, “Bali is a small island, about 150 km east to west and 80 km north to south, with a population of approximately 3 million. Yet, from morning till night, one can experience unique Balinese culture, including temple ceremonies, gamelan music, village festivals, palace dances, and the full moon prayers you experienced at Amanusa – these are the ‘seeds of joy’ for the people. At Amandari, we offer a variety of activities that showcase Bali’s rivers, volcanoes, rainforests, rice terraces, and ocean views. By interacting with the local people and learning about their culture, you will surely gain a deeper understanding of the world of Bali.”
Opening the “Amandari Guest Activities Guide” in the guest rooms reveals a rich lineup of activities that offer insight into contemporary Bali.
For instance, guests can participate in temple visits and religious ceremonies by wearing the sarong (traditional wrap skirt) and sash provided in their rooms. They can experience healing therapies from Tjok Rai, a member of the Ubud royal family residing in Negari village, known to Balinese as a great healer. Beyond surrounding sightseeing, various recreational activities such as hiking, trekking, cycling, rafting on the Ayung River, elephant safaris, and golf can also be easily arranged and enjoyed.
Furthermore, we recommend tours in Amandari’s private vehicles, equipped with beverages, soft drinks, and beer, which allow you to avoid popular tourist spots and experience the authentic side of Bali that few visitors see. The ability to customize tour times and routes entirely upon request is another significant appeal unique to Amanresorts.
