"The Sky is the Roof" – A Fiery, Magical Garden

This time, we take a trip back in time to the garden of Jean Linard (1932-2010), an Art Brut sculptor and ceramicist.

The term "Art Brut," famously coined by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, is apparently now referred to in English as "Outsider Art." While its definition has diversified over time, the underlying current is a free creativity unbound by academia.

Jean Linard was one such artist. In 1961, he began by building his own home and studio, immersing himself in ceramics. He initially named it "The Chapel," but as his imagination expanded, he renamed it "La Cathédrale" (The Cathedral) in 1983, near its completion. Homages to "Vol. 2 The Garden of Ferdinand Cheval's Ideal Palace" and "Vol. 5 The Garden of Raymond Isidore," which have already appeared in this carnet de jardin, as well as Gaudí's Sagrada Familia, are visible throughout.

The garden is imbued with sacred imagery and a magic of color. The collages of ceramic fragments he created seem to still radiate and glow with undiminished heat. Visiting this garden is sure to plunge you instantly into an Art Brut space!

Though we can no longer hear the truth about La Cathédrale from the artist himself, simply being here allows for an imaginary conversation to unfold. Even after returning to reality, the sensation of a heated, tingling body lingers.

In July 2012, it was designated a cultural heritage site by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
