TOKYO MOON PLAYLIST 2025.3.21

On a Friday night, your own time, flowing gently with exquisite music, is a moment of bliss for adults. This rich time is brought to you by DJ, selector, and broadcaster Toshio Matsuura's radio program, "TOKYO MOON." Every Friday, he simultaneously broadcasts music and topics from around the world, curated to stimulate intellectual curiosity for adults, on interFM and London's online jazz radio, One Jazz. Here, we introduce the playlist from the latest broadcast each week.

Selected by MATSUURA Toshio

Roy Ayers, the vibraphonist, producer, composer, was born in Los Angeles, USA, and passed away at the age of 84 in Manhattan, New York.
Jazz, Jazz Funk, Soul. It was an hour that traced the journey of the vibe master who steadfastly carved out a singular sound throughout his long career.

In 1993, I toured five cities in Japan with Roy as a member of UFO.
During the tour, he shared old memories with me in his hotel room.
The soft light of that night, the lingering scent of cigarette smoke, all remain in my heart along with the music.
The words and emotions embedded in the moment music is born. They seem to vanish on the wind, yet they quietly resurface at unexpected moments. That time will surely continue to resonate somewhere in our hearts forever.

Rest in Peace

Ten Years Since the ‘Miracle Monday’: Gilles Returns to the Precious Booth

In October 2015, despite it being a weekday night, a large crowd of young people were captivated, listening intently to the intense performance of the veteran jazz pianist, Ryo Fukui. We, too, felt the same after finishing our DJ set. The memory of that night is still etched in our hearts as if time had stopped. Ten years have passed since then, and the world and music have changed dramatically. Digitalization has advanced, and the ways music is delivered, listened to, and received have all changed. Nevertheless, the currents of music continue to flow within us. That is precisely why we embark on this journey to reaffirm it.
To bridge this ten-year gap, Gilles will share his latest favorites with everyone. His timeless sensibility and passion will resonate from the speakers at Precious. I, too, will open this commemorative night by showcasing my current focus, "live concerts using records," using two analog players and an amplifier.
We hope it will be a night where we can all contemplate, "What is jazz?"

Ten Years Since the ‘Miracle Monday’: Gilles Returns to the Precious Booth
October 2015, a late weekday night. Despite the hour, a large crowd of young people stood transfixed, devouring every moment of Ryo Fukui’s electrifying performance at the piano. It was as if time had stopped - an unforgettable fragment of memory that remains etched in our hearts to this day.
Ten years have passed since that night. The world and music have undergone profound changes. The rise of digitalisation has transformed not only how music is delivered but also how it is heard and experienced. And yet, the undercurrent of music still flows through us, unchanged. That’s why we embark on this journey—to reconnect with that flow and reaffirm its presence. To bridge the ten-year gap, Gilles will share his latest favourites without reservation. His timeless sense and passion will once again resonate from the speakers at Precious. As for me, I plan to mark this special night by presenting a live concert using records—performed on two analogue turntables and an amplifier—lifting the veil on this memorable evening.
"What is jazz?" A night to engage with music, share the space, and truly listen—perhaps that is what we’ll discover together.
