MUSIC | THESE NEW PURITANS New Album "Hidden"
MUSIC | The Rising Four-Piece Band That Adorned Hedi Slimane's Final Show
THESE NEW PURITANS Release Highly Anticipated New Album 'Hidden'
On Wednesday, January 13th, THESE NEW PURITANS will release their new album, 'Hidden.' Their talent, once described by the influential UK music publication 'NME' as 'not the sound of a 20-year-old,' is splendidly proven in this, their second offering. This long-awaited new album is a must-listen!
A Grand Stage Prepared for a Young, Unknown Four-Piece Band
In February 2007, the soundtrack for the final collection of Hedi Slimane's 'Dior HOMME' was provided by the then 20-year-old four-piece band, THESE NEW PURITANS. It was an extraordinary selection for an unknown band that had only released a single EP, and to make matters even more remarkable, they even appeared on the runway as models. It goes without saying that they immediately garnered significant attention.
Now, THESE NEW PURITANS are set to release 'Hidden,' their second album following their 2008 debut, 'Beat Pyramid,' on Wednesday, January 13th.
Truly 'Attack Music,' Aggressive Sounds—Jack Barnett
A 13-piece woodwind and brass ensemble, two clarinets, an alto flute, a bass clarinet, a bassoon, a contrabassoon, a flugelhorn, a baritone horn, a trombone, a bass trombone, a tuba... and a choir. By weaving in classical elements and effectively using sound effects, the music gains depth and narrative.
Vocalist Jack Barnett explains, 'I wanted to express the contrast between the powerful pop sound of Britney Spears and the melancholy derived from brass and woodwind ensembles.' The result is precisely what he aimed for.
To realize this vision, they incorporated a technique known as Foley. This method is often employed in the world of sound theater and is also frequently used in filmmaking.

'I always thought movie soundtracks had a sharper, crisper quality than CDs,' Jack says. 'I really wanted that texture. As the song title suggests, it's truly 'Attack Music,' aggressive music.'
'Hidden': A Grand, Unified Narrative
The album begins with the serene, bliss-filled 'Time Xone,' then abruptly shifts. The sound of a knife slicing through the air against the bass of a giant Japanese drum, standing 180cm tall, and the mysterious vocals of 'We Want War' transform the scene into a chaotic world shrouded in dark clouds. The seventh track, 'Orion,' resonates with a powerful, solemn harmony reminiscent of a choir, while the sounds of dragging chains and knocking doors vividly paint this eerie landscape. Finally, the ending track, '5,' brings a sense of calm, as if the thrilling developments thus far were a dream. The rhythm of a brass band, like stars twinkling in the night sky, the flute's melody, and the majestic trombone's tune evoke the arrival of a quiet night, and the story of 'Hidden' concludes as if gently drifting to sleep.
The skillfully constructed sound sources, the overwhelming level of perfection, and the consistent narrative—it's astonishing that this is only their second album. With its breathless pace and shocking developments, anyone will be instantly captivated. If you're tired of the ubiquitous sounds flooding the market, we recommend the music of THESE NEW PURITANS. It will undoubtedly shatter your preconceptions.

Taking their name from a song by the legendary post-punk band 'The Fall,' THESE NEW PURITANS is a four-piece band. They released their debut EP 'Now Pluvial' in 2006 and were ranked on 'NME's 'COOL LIST.' Subsequently, they provided the original soundtrack for Dior HOMME's Autumn/Winter 2007 collection, Hedi Slimane's final show, and some members appeared as models on the runway, generating significant buzz (George Barnett has also enjoyed success as a model, appearing in collections for high-fashion brands like 'GUCCI' and 'Dries Van Noten'). In 2008, they released their debut album, 'Beat Pyramid.' Their stylish sound and unique worldview established a cult following. That summer, they performed at Summer Sonic '08, further increasing their recognition in Japan.
