Reaching its 16th Year, Finally Arriving in Tokyo

In this, the first Asian event in the 16 years since RBMA's founding, Tokyo's rich music and art scene will be deeply explored and highlighted, transmitting Japanese culture to the world.

At the academy, 59 participants from 34 countries, selected from a pool of 6,229 applicants, will gather at a state-of-the-art music studio complex located in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo, to spend five weeks immersed in music.

Within the RBMA premises, lectures by leading contemporary musicians and producers will unfold daily. Furthermore, renowned artists and producers will serve as "mentors" to the participants, supporting their daily music production. The events will feature performances by these mentors alongside the students.

Through a diverse range of programs, including collaborations with venues and events across Tokyo, we will reconfirm and celebrate the presence of top artists who have consistently led their eras, past, present, and future.

On this page, we will highlight and introduce two events from the many on offer that showcase unique approaches: "1UP: Cart Diggers LIVE" and "test pattern [nº6] : Ryoji Ikeda."

Japanese and International Artists Explore Video Game Music Together

On Thursday, November 13, "1UP: Cart Diggers LIVE" will be held to commemorate the release of RBMA's documentary series "Diggin' In The Carts," paying homage to Japan's leading video game music creators. The documentary features artists with ties to RBMA, such as Flying Lotus, Mobb Deep, Dizzy Rascal, Just Blaze, J Rocc, and Fatima Al Qadiri, tracing their achievements.

At the event, artists from Japan and abroad will pay tribute to the soundscapes and 8-bit melodies that have influenced creators, delving into video game music together. Yuzo Koshiro, composer of "Bare Knuckle," will perform with Warp Records artist Rustie. Chip Tanaka, composer of "Metroid" and "Donkey Kong," will also present a live set. Additionally, Tokyo-based unit Dabracell will team up with the open-source hologram Hatsune Miku for a series of special performances.

Special Exhibition by Leading Electronic/Visual Artist Ryoji Ikeda

From Wednesday, November 5 to Sunday, November 9, a special exhibition by electronic/visual artist Ryoji Ikeda, "test pattern [nº6] : Ryoji Ikeda," will be held at Spiral Hall in Aoyama. Renowned for his exploration of sonic textures in minute detail and his large-scale sculptural light installations, this exhibition transforms the visible and invisible data permeating contemporary society into audible and visible works that transcend our everyday imagination, offering an experience at the limits of perception.
