In Memory of Chico Hamilton
DJToshio MatsuuraThe adult-oriented music program "TOKYO MOON" by Toshio Matsuura is broadcast every Sunday from 23:30 to 24:30 on InterFM 76.1MHz. We introduce "fresh" music carefully selected from around the world, and topics that stimulate intellectual curiosity for adults. Here, we look back at the content that has just been broadcast. This is a serialized series where you can enjoy "TOKYO MOON" with your eyes and ears, delving deeper into artists, introducing related songs, and even allowing you to purchase them. This week, we feature jazz drummer Chico Hamilton, who passed away on November 25th.

Artists of Distinctive Character
Donald Byrd, George Duke, Claude Nobbs, Cedar Walton, Rita Reiss, Don Blackman, Frank Wess, Sam Most, Satimah B. Benjamin... This year, many jazz musicians, singers, and other jazz figures I deeply admire have passed away. And at the end of last month, my beloved jazz drummer, Chico Hamilton, passed away at the age of 92, having lived a full life.
In the 1950s, within the West Coast jazz scene, which was formed in Los Angeles as the film industry flourished and was predominantly white, he stood out as a unique African-American presence. In a scene that emphasized arrangements, he was an artist whose individuality shone through, creating exceptionally rich sounds with elegant, chamber-music-like arrangements that featured the cello instead of the piano.
From his gripping performance of "Blue Sands" in the seminal jazz documentary film "Jazz on a Summer's Day" (1960), which captured the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, to the exotic dance jazz classic "Conquistadores" released in 1965 (Sadao Watanabe, who was studying abroad at Berklee, participated in the album "El Chico" featuring this track), his experimental approach, which was non-jazz for jazz, left behind many avant-garde works in his over 60 leader albums and film scores, profoundly influencing my musical perspective.
May he rest in peace.
Blue Sands
Conquistadores
The 1970 re-recording of "Conquistadores" on the album "Chico Master" has a funkier feel, perhaps reflecting the times.
The song "Gengis," introduced this time, is also included in "Chico Master." This track also influenced HEX's album.
A compilation from Blue Note released six years ago"Sunday Blue"is the song included.
