A Revival Boom on the Horizon?
Last time, we highlighted the remarkable achievements of recent new artists. Now, veteran artists are also becoming increasingly active. The Bran New Heavies, who were active in the 1990s,The Bran New Heavies, Bluey (Incognito), William Adamson (Rob Gallagher/Galliano), Omar, Elements of Life (Masters at Work) have all released new works this year, garnering significant attention.
In Japan, many will remember the excitement surrounding this music in the early 90s, a powerful era for the music scene. Now, about 20 years later, I believe this rush of releases is due to a revival boom and listeners growing tired of the recent trend of sterile, impersonal music.
Da Lata Ronco Da Cuica - Live
Da Lata, centered around London-based DJ Patrick Forge and musician Chris Franck, who have been releasing "new music" rooted in Brazilian, jazz, and Afro influences, also seems to be releasing a new work this autumn. Detroit techno DJ/producer Carl Craig has dedicated himself to evolving jazz through numerous projects such as The Detroit Experiment, Innerzone Orchestra, and Tribe (production).
Carl Craig, Francesco Tristano & Moritz Von Oswald At Les
Roy Hargrove, who performed in Japan this spring, drew a standing-room-only crowd despite it being a weekday, delivering a powerful performance that showed no signs of fading.
And I myself have begun serious music production for the first time in 12 years and plan to release my first band album by the end of the year.
While the music industry remains challenging, the fact that both new and veteran artists are making the scene interesting should be viewed positively. Ultimately, it comes down to how willing listeners are to seek out interesting music. I personally believe it's about their "attitude." At TOKYO MOON, we aim to continue delivering excitement and thrills through music for such people, so please continue to support us.
