A Power That Blows Away the New Year's Haze!

As a member of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, the Miles Davis Quintet, and Weather Report. Furthermore, as a solo artist and composer, saxophonist Wayne Shorter has created numerous works considered "masterpieces of history" for over half a century.

In 2013, the year he turns 80, he will release the album "Without A Net" from the venerable jazz label Blue Note Records, where he serves as leader. This is his first album with the label in 43 years, since musician/producer Don Was took the helm. Featured in the program is "Orbits" from his 1966 Miles Quintet era. Early in the new year, he delivers powerful and avant-garde playing throughout, defying his 80 years, a performance that will blow away any lingering New Year's haze.

"Without A Net"

"The challenge facing us artists now is how to create 'uniqueness' and 'event horizons.' This is because the cycle of actions dictated by the ego, through repetition, leads to stagnation and closes the door to life's ultimate adventure. Therefore, humans must break free from that cycle."
(Wayne Shorter)

The title "Without A Net" is a testament to his continuous forward momentum as a jazz musician, and I offer my highest praise. I eagerly anticipate his visit to Japan in March.

Wayne Shorter
Born August 1933. After playing with Maynard Ferguson's band, he joined Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers in 1959. First visited Japan in 1961. In 1964, he joined Miles Davis's quintet as Sam Rivers's successor, reaching the pinnacle of acoustic jazz with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams as the "Second Great Quintet." Around the same time, he also began recording for Blue Note. Between 1964 and 1970, he released numerous masterpieces (e.g., "JuJu" (1964), "Speak No Evil" (1965)). After leaving Miles's band, he formed Weather Report with Joe Zawinul and others in 1970. He has won nine Grammy Awards and continues his ceaseless musical explorations.

Notable Live Performances Heating Up Tokyo This Winter

A Packed Schedule of Notable Live Performances in 2013

The year 2013 promises a wealth of outstanding releases right from the start, accompanied by a series of concerts in Japan. As mentioned, Wayne Shorter, along with Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca and German trumpeter/vocalist Till Brönner, will appear at Blue Note Tokyo with their new albums, bringing warmth to a cold Tokyo winter.

Roberto gained international attention early in his career through his participation in the Buena Vista Social Club tours. He demonstrates his abundant talent across various fields, from traditional Cuban music to the modern music project "Havana Cultura," a collaboration with London DJ Gilles Peterson. Personally, I have a connection with him, having invited him to participate in United Future Organization's (U.F.O.) 2002 album "V," and I always keep an eye on his activities. What kind of "surprises" will he deliver this time? I'm looking forward to it.

Ramses Rodriguez (Drums), Joel Eresuelro (Percussion), Sekou Kouyate (Percus-

Meanwhile, Till Brönner is scheduled to visit Japan for a session with Italy's "Jazz Maestro," Nicola Conte, during the Valentine's season. While he has focused on activities outside of jazz in recent years, for his new album, he has set aside his signature vocals to showcase his trumpet skills in a jazz-funk/fusion style, collaborating with club producers. I look forward to the performance of this European jazz combo that transcends borders.
