Two years since his last album 'Cosmogramma,' this new release exceeds all expectations. Flying Lotus's unstoppable momentum continues!
Text by IWANAGA Morito
A collage of mystical phenomena, dreams, sleep, and lullabies.
Every release from Flying Lotus is an event. They are not released at regular intervals, nor are they made according to market formulas. His works share the ambitions and visions of past jazz, soul, and electric music masters, yet they depict an overwhelming future that no one has ever seen before.
His previous album, 'Cosmogramma,' depicted the 'universe' in which Flying Lotus resides. Synthesizers played soul jams that defied convention, and the great waves created by deep free jazz nomads were magnificently sublimated into a grand orchestra. From the afterglow of that 'space opera,' the seeds for Flying Lotus's next work began to sprout.
This album, described by Flying Lotus himself as "a collage of mystical phenomena, dreams, sleep, and lullabies," carries a unique sense of "a journey to the other side with nocturnal emotions." Throughout the album, a sense of tension permeates the sound, with interacting melodies and rhythms creating an elegant progression. The profound depth of cosmic bass and the exquisite fusion of computer-driven arrangements not only demonstrate his leap in growth as a producer and composer but also indicate that a deeper concept underpins every track.
Collaborations Weaving Beautiful Chaos
Nikki Randa and Laura Darlington, who have collaborated with him for many years, participate again following his previous album. His comrades, including Austin Peralta, Thundercat, Dorian Concept, and Miguel Atwood Ferguson, also gathered for this work.
Furthermore, his collaboration with Thom Yorke has been realized once again. On "Electric Candyman," which can be described as digital free jazz, you can experience their unique deep collaboration. Thundercat, who showcased his exceptional bass playing on 'Cosmogramma,' plays bass throughout this album and is also featured as a vocalist on "DMT Song." Additionally, this work sees the participation of Erykah Badu, the queen of R&B and the core of 90s neo-soul. Their long-awaited collaboration is realized on "See Thru to U," one of the album's highlights.
Based in vibrant Los Angeles, Flying Lotus exists at the heart of the beat scene, which is currently experiencing the most radical and widespread growth. While continuing to make leaps at an astonishing speed, he never loses the essential foundation of a unique "groove" created by basslines and beats. 'Until the Quiet Comes' is a work based on traditional music theory, yet it proposes entirely new methodologies. This is perhaps the mark of a masterpiece.
